My little man has had garlic breath now for about 3 weeks and I can't figure out what it may be coming from..........He is 3 1/2 years old and I've never smelled this before...Could it be a hormone thing or food or sickness....I'm troubled by this.....
A while back, if you remember, I posted about Harley not eating his Harrison's like he once was and then is when I decided to add a new brand to his diet which is Roudybush crumbles pellets and Lafabers avi-cakes and nutriberries....He still eats his vegs and fruits too....
Any suggestions, ideas or comments will certainly be appreciated....If I can't seem to find out what this could be, we may have to call his vet....Hoping it isn't sickness.....
And hoping someone can give me some answers.....Thanks..........

Well I'm not sure about the garlic smell, but Maya had bad breath a few months ago and from what I'd read it was an indicator of a possible yeast infection. We started adding Apple Cider Vinegar to her water for a couple of weeks and it went away. She never had any other symptoms otherwise I would have gone to the vet immediatly.
If you want to try the ACV first, make sure it's the type with "mother".
I sure hope Harley is okay.

It seems to me we just had a thread about the same thing only with cockatoo's But I don't remember what the outcome was.
It can't hurt to do the ACV though.
But, I'd call at least and talk to the vet and see what he/she has to say as well...
Cuz I certainly can't remember what we decided was causing it...or even if we did...

Hmmm, thanks all...Seems like that thread slipped my mind.....
Thanks for the bump QPdad.....
The reason I mentioned food is that I didn't notice this smell until I started adding other brands of food....And it isn't an onion smell, it is garlic...I just thought maybe the food might be a factor in this which I was hoping someone might know....
Harley seems to be the same, in fact, he has gone back to building and laying off his paper shredding; he stays busy and is eating and drinking and his poop looks the same........
I think I'll check his weight in the morning since I haven't checked it lately......And I'll see about getting this mother ACV....Guess I'll have to go to the organic store, right?

Not necessarily Julie, Just look for bottles that have the murky bottom that's the mother...(the sediment in the bottom of the bottle)

Julie, i've always been able to find ACV at the grocery store, it's used a lot in salad dressings.
I hope Harley is OK, give your vet a call for sure

I get Willie's ACV at the health food store.
All I can find at the grocery store around here is pasteurized and strained which gets rid of the "mother" (mother of vinegar).

Okay, now I'm going shopping for this mother ACV tomorrow at the grocery store and if I can't find it, I will ask the manager....That way I won't be spending all day looking for something I have no idea what it looks like...
Now---If I find the vinegar, please tell me how much to put in a 10 oz bowl of water....
]And yes, I'll be calling Dr. Brown tomorrow...Thanks

Julie,
Didn't you also mention some damage to Harley's bill the other day and his bill not looking so good in general? When you go to the health food store, also get some milk thistle (liquid form so that you can add it to some juice or whatever) and/or aloe vera detox juice (which also contains milk thistle). I by no means want to say that Harley has a liver problem, but liver problems can manifest themselves as lower resistance against infections and giving Harley some milk thistle may be "good maintenance" anyway. Shouldn't do any harm (normally). The combination with him also not eating his Harrison's like before makes me think a vet check is in order.
Keep us posted.
Ange
PS
You may even want to call ahead to the store to save more time. ;-)

UPDATE
Thanks everyone for your ideas....I just called Dr. Brown's office and he doesn't seem to be concerned about it....The girl I talked with did say to check the ingredients on the new bags of food that I've been giving him because she said some of the brands have the bell peppers in it and birdie can smell like bell pepper when they have eaten it...
In the meantime I'll check out the vinegar and thistle and see if that will eliminate any smell.........I also had her to check his chart for his weight and I weighed him this morning and he is still weighing the same thing he did when in the doctor's office back in October....
However, in the meantime I made an appt anyway to get his wings trimmed and also his toe nails..The appt. is next Thursday so we'll see if anything is going on with Harley that may need attention.......
Question: How much vinegar do I put in a 10 oz. water bowl?????
Ange---you have a good memory--His beak is looking better, I think what happened is he has been rubbing it too hard on his cement perch...Thanks for remembering...Beak is looking better....

Julie, I use 1 teaspoon of ACV per quart of water. I read that somewhere on the forum. I just mix it and keep it in the fridge.
