We just got a cat this week he is 6 months old very sweet but is up all night and went poop on my bathroom floor. He uses the litter box I havent caught him spraying any where. First off I need my sleep I am 7 months pregnant with a 15 month old and I love my night time sleep and he is keeping me up all night and he sleeps during the day how do I fix this? Also I dont think he is spraying but if he did would I smell it right away? What should I do about the poop in the bathroom do you think its because he is still adjusting? Some one please help I dont want to just get rid of him but I really need to fix these problems.

Oh if he was spraying you would know... it REALLY stinks and it's a hard smell to get out of.

Are you home during the day? If you are, play with kitty for a few hours before you want to go to bed... even if it's just waving a laser pointer around while you watch TV. That should help him burn off some extra energy. Since he is only 6 months old he is still in a kitten phase, which means he has a lot of extra energy. The "up all night kitty 5000 races" should start to fade as he gets older.

If he's only been at your house for a week the poop could have been an accident - are you locking him in the bathroom at night? Does he have a litterbox in there?

Just give him some more time. What is he doing to keep you up at night?

Yes I am an at home mom. His litter box is in our room and he has free range of the house. He got a hold of my daughters blocks and was running through the house he runs and runs and runs all night!!!

Odds are the poop was an accident. However, if it continues you may want to try a different type of litter. I had one kitten that refused to use anything but the scoopable litter. Also, his schedule is messed up, like how a baby can get. Make it a point to wake him up and play with him a couple of times a day. Also, cats are nocturnal, so playing at night is perfectly normal. I had 2 kittens who would start their play time every night as we crawled into bed to go to sleep. As soon as the lights went out, they started playing. If it's keeping you awake at night, maybe put him and his litterbox in another room and close your bedroom door at night, or lock him in your bedroom at night or something like that. Also, be extremely careful cleaning his litter box. Pregnant women are susceptible to illness from cleaning a litterbox. Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards or have someone else clean it.

This is a fixable problem, please don't give up on your new kitten to soon. Also, if he's not already neutered I suggest having it done soon or else he will be spraying. Even if he doesn't start spraying, his normal urine will stink to high heaven and he'll begin exhibiting behaviors you don't want (roaming, urges to breed, territoriality, marking his territory, etc).

Don't go NEAR the litterbox if you don't have to. Bribe anyone you can, even pay a neighbor kid, but stay away from it and any other accidents the kitten has. The illness you and your unborns are suceptible to is toxoplasmosis! It almost killed my cat a few years ago.

For accidents (first get someone else to clean it up!) put down a paper plate with a couple of pieces of his food on it. Just 2 or three is fine. Cats won't eat where they poop, and eventually learn that the food is following them everywhere but the litterbox. This worked on my female, but not my male. The male was doing it as a behavioral problem, though, caused by a traumatic kittenhood.

Try to make sure your cat is up during the day and keep him active so he gets the message he should sleep at night. Try also putting the litter box in a different location than your room so that you can close your bedroom doors at night.
Your cat is male and he possibly might start spraying soon if he hasnt been neutered.
good luck and hang in there

He is still new and it make take him a while to get used to his new surroundings. I agree with getting him fixed. You don't want to wait until he starts spraying, because he may continue to do so even after he is fixed.

Another note on the night time sleeping. Try putting a ticking clock where he is suppose to sleep. That will sometimes help soothe them. This was something I did when I brought my second cat home. She was a nightmare for the first few weeks and then someone told me the clock thing and it worked like a charm.
