Hola Everyone!
I've had a couple birds in the past, and decided recently i'd like to invest my love in the Quaker. I've been looking up lots of information on them, and they seem like absolutely lovely birds!
So a little about myself. I'm a 17 year old gal, from Ontario, Canada. I'm in my last year of highschool, and will be moving out in two months! Whoohoo! In which, by that time, my baby can go with me.
Right now, all i know is s/he is a green Quaker, and at a good friends of mine, which is a breeder of all different kinds of birds! She just got some babies, and asked if I wanted one, and I jumped on it right away! They are still really young, so she will wean it off for me.
As for bird experience... when I was in my first year of highschool, I had a "hand-raised" budgie, but I didn't think he was really hand-raised, he was very wild. He died sadly the beginning of this year.
(urg... I really hate sharing this information because it makes me feel really guilty, But i guess you guys have the right to know).
A few months later, I bought a Green Pacific Parrotlet, named Kaizoku. He was my best friend, and we were inseperable. But I went on a week long cruise, with him in my parents care, and he died when I was gone, we presumed because he missed me. That broke my heart, and I almost decided to give up on the love of birds.
Judy (the breeder) felt bad, and gave me a baby lovebird, in which I hand-fed. And she died a bit later. We're not sure why, but we think it is something in the house, so I am refraining from getting another until I move out.
So yeah... I hate sharing that, I feel like I'm an awful person, but Judy says that she knows I gave my birds a lot of love, and she trusts that I took care of them the best I could.
I was thinking of never getting a bird again. Just because losing them really tore me to pieces. But Judy said I couldn't lose hope, and told me to wait a bit until I move out.
So yeah... that's my story.
A bird obsessed teenager with a sad history.
I hope you guys don't hate me >.>
Anyways, I came here to find out more information about Quakers before I journeyed off into the ownership of one. And you know, maybe make some friends (if you'll have me).

Of couse we'll have you! You can definitely make a lot of friends here, everyone is so friendly and nice.

Maybe you have just had some bad bird luck and you'll have a fresh start with your Quaker.
You'll love being owned by a Quaker, they are amazing birds, we have only had our Green Q, Casey for 3.5 months and I love her so much!
Yay Ontario... I am from Ontario too!

Anyways, this is quite the addicting website and you will learn tons of useful information about Quakers. Feel free to ask any questions!

Hmmmmm where the heck did you read that?!? LOL I have to ask because every website I've seen on Quakers usually has something to do with them being a 'problem' bird. Unfortunatly, and I have NO idea why, Qs have a bad reputation. Which is sad, because they totally rock!! Quakers are a very misunderstood birdie.
Anyways, Welcome to the forum and of course you are more then welcome!!

I totally agree Carrie-Anne! When someone offered me a Quaker that needed rescuing and I started researching them and all I read was bad things, and it totally scared me... but then I found this site, and it made me feel like I wasn't making a huge mistake!

Casey is amazing and I wouldn't trade her for anything... why does everyone else make them sound so bad!?

I always tell people that they are like a big parrot in a small package... they are sooooo smart!

Good choice Azale!

Welcome from a fellow Ontarian!!!
Quakers are fabulous birds!!! You'll love this site, very informative, great people, (terribly addictive site though, lol)
I agree with what the others have said. Most information provided about quakers does not shed too positive a light on them. Being the owner of one...I can't understand why that is. I don't see it as necessarily a bad thing however because only the truly devoted need own a quaker (or should I say-be owned by a quaker)and the negative comments may disuade the not so strong @ heart bird lover.
Good luck with your new fid

Well the websites I found said good things, lol.
They seem like fun, active birds, which is what I need. And I hear they are great talkers too

Welcome to the forum!
If my Chica is anything like the normal QP, they are pretty resilient birds. She spent the first 3 years of her life with crack addicts who smoked the stuff in the same room, she never got out of her too small cage and was not fed properly. She was plucking, afraid and constantly screaming when she came to me. Now, with good food, exercise, love and a much bigger cage she is fully feathered, happy and just the greatest little companion I could imagine. She doesn't much like pellets but loves fresh food and totally thrives on lots of fruit and veggies, rice, pasta and even bits of protein foods like chicken and egg whites. She totally amazes me. There is not a day goes by that she doesn't make me laugh -- sometimes I have to sit down, she cracks me up so much.
So, don't be too hard on yourself and read lots of prior posts to learn up on QP's. You will do fine. We Canadians face our challenges head on and the more information you have the more confident you will be.
Besides, you are going to love being owned by a quaker.
