Full Version: Has Anyone Here Ever Worked From Home?

Q and Miss D
I have the chance to apply for a work-from-home position at my job. It's not some BS data entry thing from Monster, I work at Dell. I was just wondering if anyone here has ever worked from home and has some experiences they want to share?

I really think it would be good for my bird to have me around all the time, as his room would be my work room. I take calls as I am inbound tech support, but he's never loud when I am with him, only when he can hear but not see me.

I work from home about a third of my day... so I don't have any "full time" at home experience. In my situation, I think it makes it harder on Poppy. The days when I can't get home all day are hard on him... he is clearly mad and lets me know it.
He is spoiled enough! It s probably a good thing I have to go to work!

working from home can have good and bad points. You have to be able to seperate home from work otherwise one can run into and take over the other. it can also be difficult on the fids because they get used to you being there all of the time and then if you suddeny aren't they have trouble adjusting.

you also have to take into account that you don't have that face to face human contact. it can get lonely.

I work remote aka telecommute somedays and other days I work from my office at work. I take my quaker with me when I go to work. He is used to the arrangement and well socialized so its all good for me (besides I am the director of software chief cook and bottlewasher too)
Usually when I am working from home and I need to teleconference I have my birds in another room mostly because my U2 and conure can get pretty loud.
Some days I even take my laptop and headset out to the deck and work outside.
It can be nice working from home with the exception of if I do it every day it feels like a prison sentance because I see the same walls day in and day out etc...

Otherdays I am so distracted and dont want to work at all.

I am sure you will find your balance in the situation you are presented tho.

I would like to work from home.....if you have any ideas, send me a PM. I would be glad to DO ANYTHING!!!

I work tech support for Dell computers, so when my day is done, it's done. There are always emails to respond to though. And I have three roomates so when I am done I can chat their ear off. My only real concern is that when I am on a call, Q will start squawking, which Dell would clearly not like.

If you want to move to Edmonton, I would gladly get you a job working for Dell wink.gif

I work from home for a big security company doing network administration - I've done this for 10 years now from home, been with this company 15. The first 5 were in the office, last 10 in my back bedroom which I made an office. Like others have said, it can get lonely - but I have Bubba to talk to. It does make the bonding tighter and it does make answering the phone difficult sometimes. But all in all, I would not trade it for anything - no driving, no having to dress up and no over the cube pressure from others. It is hard sometimes though when the weather is absolutely beautiful to stay put - but I find I have enough work (except when on the forum dry.gif ) to keep me busy and out of trouble. Good luck with your decision - I'm glad I made mine so many years ago and mine is not a work day from 9-5 or 8-4 job, unfortunately. I start at 6am - end at 5pm and answer phones until 7pm, also on call all night which does happen sometimes. But I would not trade it for anything tongue.gif

I heard direct tv does tech support from home, you need a land line, high speed internet and a quiet enviroment. Maybe its dish...not sure.

that's pretty much what Dell does. They give us a notebook and some money for a desk and chair - if we have one, the money is a bonus. They also give you the phone/equipment and set up the notebook on the remote network and away you go. It works well because it frees up cubes for new agents and those who work at home I guess really like it. I don't know if they will pay for my high speed I think that's something where they give you a seperate connection or something.

I work at home doing 3D drawings for different companies using my hubbies Autocad and Inventor programs. My fids are usually with me all day at the computer or laptop and I never seem to have any problems....Although everytime I get a phone call Reggie tries to talk to the person on the other end of the phone and can get loud. She is also infamous for chewing up all the printer paper she can find! huh.gif It was only a year ago that I was working as a pharmacy tech - a job that I had been doing for 5 years, but then I broke my ankle in 3 places and was told that I could not go back to work until I have the plates and pins removed. So here I am with 2 wonderful little birds, working from home and loving every moment of it biggrin.gif Funny how things work. wink.gif

for anyone who may have been curious, I got the job and I think Quincy really likes having me home during the day even though he's not getting my totally undivided attention!

Congrats! I'll be interviewing next Tuesday for a work-from-home job, it's data entry for a local company, I'd have to go in to drop off/pick up work a few days a week. I'm gonna go for part-time just so it's supplemental income while we get ready to move. smile.gif

Congrats Darci. biggrin.gif
I would love to have a stay at home job. I don't teach anymore so a job like that would be perfect for me

A work from home job is what I have been working toward for the last 4 months. I am almost there and have been counting the days until I can finally start my training.

As much as I love people, as I have gotten older I am finding that being around people in a work setting is really more stressful for me than raising my children. So, learning from home and then working from home is really the best option for me (and the rest of the public laugh.gif ).

I have talked to a lot of people, online and face to face, about how they prioritize their responsibilities, and the best advice I have heard is to treat the work day as just that...a work day. Time set aside for just work, not working in between loads of laundry and meal preparation. Conversely, when the work day is done, it's done. It's time to be with the family as well as taking some wind-down time.

Hope that helps,

Tari
