Frankie's Mom
Okay, so it has been newly discovered by my hubby that both Q's LOVE anything with garlic in it. I have checked the sites and lists of foods not to give them, and it isn't as like they would get an entire clove or anything, but whenever they smell the garlic they start begging for it.

Has anyone else ever experienced this or do you have thoughts as to any reason they shouldn't be allowed to have some as a snack?
Carrie~Anne
It is okay...in moderation. Garlic does have some herbal uses when it comes to parrots, BUT, it can also cause anemia (same with onions). I personally don't give it to my birds, but you can offer them one to two thin slices a week (as per this website: Click~Here )
Mara
I read in a recent Birdtalk not to give your birds onions or garlic because it thins their blood and their blood is already very thin.

Yes, I have heard the same thing. We don't give it to our birds as we have heard it is harmful. unsure.gif Not sure though...

Thanks for the info! Carrie~Anne, that was a great link, I appreciate you sending it to me.

Well, now we will have to break it to the fids that garlic isn't good for them, which will be tough because they know that pungent smell. Funny, when we are eating something that they cannot have, such as an avacado, Frankie will waddle over and ask for a bite. When I say "No, bad for you" he understands! His standard response ... "bad for birdie"! LOL wub.gif

There are different opinions on the use of Garlic. A lot of holistic vets use it as it is a natural anitbiotic amongst many other things. Here are a couple of links on Garlic and the uses thereof with parrots. As you will see it depends in what form and the amount that is given.

One of Louie's treats is the Troso Treats and they are flavoroud with Garlic. He loves it. He does not get it every day however. So I think a little bit 2 or 3 x a week is actually very beneficial.
