When i first brought cricket home another dog tryed nursing her. Cricket has never had puppies and can't now. Is this normal or should I take her to the vet?
KathyC
YES my dog has actually started to lactate thats the part that grosses me out. Is it really normal??

Oooohhhh....that is so sweet!! And yes I have heard of dogs doing that before. You might call your vet to see if it is healthy for her to take care of them since she is so little and I don't know how old she is.

yeah I'm calling a vet tomorrow. My hubby and kids have had these kitties almost a week. I don't know when this started and they don't know if they were doing this before or not.

Cricket is a little over a year old and we had her spayed. Should she still be able to give milk? I know these are probably stupid questions but I've never had a dog to nurse kitties before.

Awwww that's really sweet wub.gif Kathy I don't have any answers but awwwwwwww wub.gif Let us know what the vet says

in humans if you massage the teat enough the gland will start to produce milk, not as packed full of vits as natural milk, maybe this is what happened to cricket

Its not uncommon...I've seen it once or twice...but I don't think the dogs had been spayed...

Cricket doesn't seem to be minding it at all...What a cute picture.

Let us know what your vet says.

its actually somewhat normal ive heard of many dogs becoming surrogate mothers. i think you should call the vet just to make sure she's healthy. thats bout it, she seems to be relaxed..lol

She sure seems to be taking it well! Look what a loving, good little girl she is! I have heard of this happening before, but have no first hand experience with it. Let us know what the vet says!

Pretty little dog. Some dogs just have a very strong maternal instinct. The fluid that is coming from here isnt true milk.It prob wont hurt her but i can see where it prob shouldnt be encouraged. Looks like she is in seventh heaven though.

I called the vet about Cricket today he said that since she was in season a couple of months ago and actually bred the sneaky neighbors dog. That she thinks that these are her own babies he says this will likely go away on its own in a week or so. I hope so. She growls when the other dogs come near her babies. Its funny now she is still very affectionate to them but isn't trying to feed them now.

I took the kitties to the vet today and they needed to be wormed and he guesses they are about 5-7 weeks old. They have names now, Kane the white faced one and Kitty the one with the mask.

Just had to let you know your not alone. My dog did the same thing this year. We had kittens born on the property, and she started lactating she even gained weight. Vet informed me because she was not spayed, she went into a false pregancy because of the kittens. She still treats them as her own. Naturally she doesn't feed them but she looks after them as if they were puppies. They are very close, the kittens which are cats now even wash, and sleep with her.
Who says cats and dogs can't get along...lol

Wow! I've heard of this happening but hadn't seen it first hand. She looks so happy with those kittens. wub.gif That's so neat!
