Full Version: "normal" Pooh?

As I am a new owner, I wonder what "normal" quaker pooh should look like. I brought Otis home from the pet store a week ago. He is about 4 months old. His is runny and green. Is that normal?
I do not have a book to reference yet. I am waiting for it to come in the mail.
I am having a hard time locating pellets to feed him. He is now on a seed mix that includes veggies, fruit and some pellets along with other assorted items. None of the pet stores have pellets. The store where I bought him didn't even know there was such a thing. I know I have seen you talk of the pellets. Do I need to get them online?
I am giving him fresh fruits and veggies but he tends to throw some off the side of his cage...I think he may be feeding my dog.
Any other suggestions on diet would be great. I will keep trying different items until I find a couple he enjoys. I do continue to hand feed him and put some in a dish.
Thanks for all the great advice.

Congrats on becoming a parront. You can buy pellets on line at any bird supplier. I primarily use Drs. Foster and Smith. Another source is Fantasy Feathers. Make sure you read other threads about weaning them off seeds. Good luck. Sandy-Tobys mom

Poop can be different based on what bird eats.

I work in a pet store and i get that question alot. "pellet" is the general type of food that is not seed, but it looks like pieces of cereal. It can be all one "natural" color, or it could be different colors and shapes. The word "pellet" will not be on the package, that is why it is so confusing to new bird parents. most pet stores will carry pellet, but sometimes the employees there will not know the term "pellet."

I hope this helps!

Parrot Pooh Basic's

1. Feces: solid, tubular shaped, color varies dependent on diet
(Seed fed birds generally green, pellet fed birds rainbow, changes with
table food also)

2. Urates: pasty white to cream color, irregularly shaped around the feces

3. Urine: clear liquid portion, no odor when healthy

There are many reasons for watery messes. Too much of a good thing: Fruits and Veggies can cause problem if fed in excess. Offering different brands of pellets can also cause runny like stools or poohs. It is best to stick to one type of pellet and follow the recommend ratio's of table foods to help reduce this problem. If a stool is lose for several hours, you would be right to get concerned, but concider diet and watch for 24 hours pulling things known to losen stools. If other signs of illness present do not wait as birds can dehydrate in as little as a few hours. Dehydration can lead to shock and death.

She covered a lot of it on that post. I know all my fids have watery poop after the shower.
