We're new quaker parents and wondering if they can get sick from us. I have the flu and he/she really likes to nibble on me.

Hi Linda:
My QP never got sick when I had the flu but I don't know whether that holds true. I hope you are feeling well soon.
When you feel well, you can post some pics of your little green chicken and tell us about him/her, like name, age, a bit about yourselves, etc. Pics are good............

Welcome to the forum Linda! (a.k.a. the most addicting place on the internet!)

I agree with Lizz, I am almost postive that they can't get people germs.

I hope you feel better soon!
Welcome!

Just be diligent about washing your hands before and after handling your bird and keep your face away (so no kisses if your birdie likes those

).

They can get a couple things, like salmonella and chlamydia (which you should be concerned about if they are on you regardless...) but the common cold and other human viruses- no. We can really only transfer that sort of thing to primates and vice versa. More concerning is if you go into a pet store with birds- wash thoroughly after coming from a place like that. You might carry birdie dander or other particulates from the store to your pet.

In my line of work I am exposed to everything. I don't take any chances. I wont list the pathogens that could possibly cause problems, there are many. I don't even give kisses when I am sick. OTOH, I did all that with Libby and she died very young anyway. Vigorous handwashing will help alot. I am used to doing it from work.
