Hi I'm new here.
I live in the UK with my 20 year old son, Pepsi the yorkshire Terrier age 10, Bobby the african grey age 8, Keisha the senegal age 6, Magic the quaker age 3, Scottie and Rikishi the budgies age 3 and last but not least Ram and Java the parrotlets age 2.
Bobby, Keisha and Magic were all bought/adopted as older birds. I have had Bobby and Keisha for almost 3 years now and Magic since January this year.
Magic was a handreared bird and he came to me because his previous owners hubby had started working nights and Magic would keep him awake sceaming all day while he was trying to sleep. They were both pretty distraught when they brought him to me as they loved him very much, they just felt they had no choice.
He was plucked around his neck and on his lower legs when I got him, and I was told he started plucking around August last year. I have never actually seen him pluck around his neck but it doesn't seem as if any feathers are growing back. The ones on his legs start growing in and then he will pluck them out again, he even gives a little squeal at times when he plucks them out and there are sometimes spots of blood on his legs. He has now plucked all up his legs and thighs and seems to have started on his chest this last 2 weeks. I have tried a lot of different things to distract him. He has plenty of toys that I rotate regularly, he has plenty of time out of his cage. He will eat warm vegetables but doesn't like fruit or cold/fresh vegetables.
He talks to me and the other birds, he still shouts his other owners names at times and I wonder if he still misses them and whether this makes his plucking worse. He seems to be doing ok in himself it's just the plucking (and the screeching lol) that's the problem.

Welcome to the most addicting place on the internet!

We have a few other members from the UK as well.

Have you taken Magic to an avian vet to see if the plucking is a medical issue or just stress related?
Some other members have some experience with plucking so I'll let them answer that one...

Again, Welcome!

We would love to see some pictures of your fids! (feathered, furred or finned kids)

Welcome to the forum!!! Sounds like you have your hands full with some pretty amazing parrots!!!
As for the plucking issue...have you taken Magic into an avian vet to rule out any medical issues? This is a good first step to trying to figure out why the plucking happens.

Welcome to the forum! You have an amazing collection of fids there.
Sorry I can't help with the plucking issues. All I know is that Chica was plucking when I rescued her from an abusive home over three years ago and she immediately stopped as soon as she got attention. That is clearly not the problem with your little green chicken but I heartily endorse the idea of having him checked out by an avian vet to see whether there is a medical problem.
Best of luck!

Hi, Welcome to QP.com...I agree with everyone else...best place to start is with an avian vet, so they can rule out anything medical going on that might be causing the problem

Welcome, you've been given some great advise, and we do have a couple members from the UK, and they may know of an avian vet near you. Again, welcome to the forum.
