One quick question. How do you keep the cat from eating the smaller animals? I was gonna post this question in the forum but saw all your critters so thought you would be a great one to ask. I am getting a Ragdoll kitten in two weeks. I am worried about how to keep him from hurting my Quaker when he is out of his cage. Our Quaker spends most of his time on his large Parrot tower in front of the glass door. We also have two small dogs but they don't bother the Quaker unless he flutters to the ground. (then they act like they are gaurding him. My daughter would like to get a hampster or guiney pig but I told her that the cat may grow and eat small pets.

So what's the trick with keeping cats friendly? Or can you just never trust when instinct will kick in?

You can never COMPLETELY trust the cats/dogs around your smaller critters, but when I got my last kitten, I purposely let the birds show him who's boss! wink.gif They would nip at his tail and ears and he learned right quick that those feather things BITE!! lol I do not EVER trust him (or BK) alone with the fids out, but both the cats know the 'evil eye' mom gives them along with the sharp NO! when they get that look in their eye.

I have a video of one of my tiels chasing the cats, and it is hilarious, but I AM RIGHT THERE obviously. When I leave the house, the fids are put in their cages.

I raised my cats with the birds so they know they can't touch them, but instinct is instinct and cats will be cats. NEVER LEAVE THEM ALONE together.

I don't get the draw of sugar gliders myself...the few I've been around were nasty and their bites were pretty fierce ...

I guess I just don't know enough about them and what they do in the animal kingdom and what their roll is...But the ones I was around, personalities sucked!
Tari
I have two sugar gliders, Hammee and Haylee, and they are just wonders to watch.

I think the draw to them for me is that, just like birds, they take a while to warm up to you (usually...Hammee warmed up to me right away) and then they just LOVE to be with you. They are exotic pets and have particular needs, but the love they give is soooo worth it!

The sugar gliders make a loud noise that freaked my cat out blink.gif so he stayed away from them LOL (helps if your cat is a big chicken too hehe)he's better now though. The female glider I bought, her parents were smuggled in from australia. So she wasn't socialized I've had her for about 2 yrs now and she's still crabby from time to time but nothing as to how she was. She use to rear up and bare her teeth and lung at me sad.gif Now she jumps to the bars when its feeding time to get her mealies (mealworms) so we've come a long way. The other 2 (male and female) I also purchased. The male I bought from a breeder so he was WELL socialized. As soon as I open the cage hes out and up my arm and down my back LOL. I've had 3 litters from them so I have the opportunity to socialize them. My cat is very mellow I too had rats when he was a kitten so hes use to critters being around. He would actually play with the rats LOL they would jump onto the bars and he would run up to them then run away and come back (this game would last most of the day LOL)I also had a hedgehog (corbin) who use to push the cat around haha. The one that I am concerned with is the dog. He's the jealous type..Listens well, but gets jealous LOL..I'm hoping that since he's still a puppy it shouldn't be a huge transition for him unsure.gif

Your fur-babies are so cute, I used to have sugar gliders which I miss soooo much, I had to relocate them- I used to be military so it got tough- great bunch.
