OK, so I got Journey home, and he is eating great. Just to see what he would do, I put a millet spray in his little aquarium. He went to town on it!!
The breeder was unsure of his exact age (they had a lot of Q's of all ages in one container), so I don't know that for sure. I'm guessing somewhere around 6 weeks. I'll attach a pic.
I want him/her to have the best diet from the beginning..if I am going to start weaning, what should I wean him to? I've heard pellets are best..any suggestions on what I should begin offering? Journey is now being handfed Zupreem handfeeding formula.
THANKS!
Stephannie and Buzz
If she is only six weeks, you should continue handfeeding for about 5 to 6 more weeks. But then again she may be older beacuse lots of chicks wont even notice solid food near them until about 10 weeks. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

You can put him on pellets, nutriberries or harvest bites. Preferably pellets and you can feed other stuff on the sides.

Oh, he is super cute!!! If he's going after millet, you can start offering pellets and fresh foods. He might just pick at it, but it will get him used to the food.

Keep handfeeding him as he needs it, the more he eats solid foods, the less he will take the formula. smile.gif

Also when you notice him starting to get interested in playing in water and attempting to drink it thats a good sign that he's truly ready to wean and won't need the moisture he gets from the formula.

I would offer him several different types of small pellets and millet Hopefully he's perching and has different sized perches to sit on. If he isn't perching yet, he's too little to wean.

Also have a small dish of water where he can reach it and as I said when you see him becoming interested in it...the time is getting close.

Maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't a breeder know how old their babies are? Doesn't the band have the dates? It doesn't sound like she kept her clutches seperate...
When we got Joy, she was 8 weeks old and was fully weaned, so they each wean at different times. COntinue to give the feedings until he shows interest in eatting other things. You can offer Cheerios, and things like that...fruit, pellets...he doesn't need seeds....call the pellet companies and get some samples..someone will come along and give those 800# Harrison's is: 800-745-7329..I think they only have one kind in the samples...the Fine grind is what Gabby loves...Roudybush is good too and you can get a fine grind too in that brand...

By the way, your baby is SO cute...congratulations!!!

Yah every breeder i know has a record of births. Don't you want to know how old your parrot is ?

Thanks so much..and I agree..there is no reason they shouldnt know the ages of thier birds. She's banded..but I am having a hard time reading anything. Not all the babies were banded, and they were all together in one tank. :/
