Heidi----that is very strange that I would hear someone else with this problem...

I don't know if you remember or even saw the post I put up about Harley's breath smelling like that also a while back....It was really bad, but it would come and go. Well he happened to have a vet appt. during this time and I mentioned it to the vet, but at that time you couldn't smell it on Harley...And the vet didn't make much fuss about it...

Is Stendeck just before going into his hormonal, happy time phase?....The reason I say that is, that before Harley got really fiesty and in the love making thing now, which he is, is when he smelled like garlic/onion....And it lasted about 2 weeks...Ugg

But like I said, it would come and go with Harley...Have you noticed that way with Stendeck?....

I'm interested to know how things go along with Stendeck, for the fact that Harley was exactly the same way awhile back...Keep in touch Heidi....

Sorry you are having to go thru this and for an expectant mom, I can imagine how you feel....
Heidi, I went and checked the thread I started on what I mentioned...It is under "Diet and Health" on page 5 and the title is "Could it be Food or Sickness"....

Isnt that funny,

I will go and have a look at what you put. I know Sten is having a good malt at the mo, feathers and down all over but as yet he hasnt attempted to mount my hand which is a sure sign he is hormonal. However I havent really made a big fuss of him as he smells so bad, its not the smell you want to get snuggly with LOL But it is that time of year.

I am pretty sure it is garlic as the cous cous was home made and I did put garlic in it. Will keep you posted. x
Dark Angel
I want the cous cous recipe pretty please with brown sugar on top??????

I was just thinking. I took some medicine once and it left a really awful taste in my mouth, you know like someone did a number 2 in there. So I am wondering if it tasted like that I wonder if it smelled like that. So my conclusion is you are darn lucky that his breath does not smell like number 2. laugh.gif
LuvMyHarley1
I appreciate Heidi you keeping me posted....Maybe Sten's won't last as long as Harley's did.....It sure had me concerned....And I meant to mention that after 3 1/2 years this is the first time I have ever smelled something like this on Harley and it sure had me concerned....

So if you read the post I mentioned, I guess you can just say that it isn't anything serious since the vet didn't say much about it....He put Harley up to his nose at that time and smelled and smelled and couldn't smell a darn thing.... blush.gif

Poor Heidi....Keep your distance if it makes you sick.... huh.gif It is replusive for sure....

I read your thread and notices you had been changing the food, and while I was searching I found this thread http://www.quakerparrots.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23037 and wondered if this could be anything to do with Harley's breath issue, it about garlic being added to pellets!!!!

Stendeck still smells a little odd but not as bad this will be his second day of stinking, its less like garlic now and just weird smelling. Very peculiar!!

joni did you use baby food or the food for toddlers. After looking at numerous jars at the store I have found that its sometimes listed in the toddler bigger kid jars of food over infant food which has no seasoning at all.

huh.gif I used infant baby food (carrots, mixed veg and applesauce) and baby dry cereal , some peanut butter and fresh veggies.

Am I okay?

Thanks,

He still stinks.!!!!

And you vet said there was nothing wrong?

Hubby cant smell it, some breaths seem worse than others.

Perhaps its my over sensitice pregnant nose.

What a threat this turned out to be ohmy.gif
Dark Angel
I have to go out in a few but joni do you know what brand you got generally this brand http://www.gerber.com/prodcat?catid=496 is a popular one and on that site it should have the ingrediants. Infant food for little babys tends to not have seasonings in it like garlic because you are introducing one food at a time to a baby and the wouldnt put it in it due to allergies etc...
when it comes to garlic anyways in small dosages it should be safe all the same the problem is in its powdered form its really concentrated. so if you used fresh garlic in your cous cous and your fid doesnt get it often stendecks mum I think your bird is ok ...however if his breath does still smell I would take him for a vet check because bad breath in quakers can mean a yeast infection.

I used gerber infant baby food in the bread.

Goodness Gracious so he still stinks, sorry about that....

No, I don't think my vet said there was nothing wrong, he just didn't seem to be concerned about it and chalked it up to be hormonal......however, he could have said he DIDN'T THINK anything was wrong... tongue.gif Now I've forgotten just what he said.. blush.gif

Anyway Heidi, The garlic breath finally went away and I don't use baby food of any kind and the pellets he eats does not show any garlic in any of them, that being Harrisons and Roudybush...Unless I overlooked something.....

I sure hope little Stendeck will start smelling better, if not get him to gargle with a mouthwash... laugh.gif Just kidding.... HANG IN THERE HEIDI... But do let us know if this continues...I have been reading the links provided...and thank you....
Gizmo #1
wow. How can you fix that? Can you crunch a breath mint in his food? Only kidding for the technical people.
Joysmom
I thought garlic was bad for birds...I've never noticed any odor on Gabby's breath...or Joy's for that matter..
Hope it goes away for you soon...

YIKES Yeast infection, what next!!!

It was fresh garlic, one section in a whole pan of cous cous. Im begining to wonder if its the garlic at all now huh.gif I never smelled the smell before and he never had garlic before so I just put 2 & 2 together blink.gif
Casey's Mom
Hmmm... interesting thread!

Sometimes Casey's breath smells really bad when she is trying to regurgitate for me, but it doesn't usually smell bad. I do know that that is one sign of sickness (like IMPy said, yeast infection) but I am not sure if the garlic in the cous cous would have that lasting affect too. Would the smell on his breath last that long from the cous cous, was it really strong when you were eating it? Casey's has never had garlic so I don't know if it would last. unsure.gif

I would think if the smell doesn't go away in a couple of days I would take him to the vet, but if your hubby doesn't smell it, maybe you have a sensitive, pregnant nose?! laugh.gif ... I really don't know what to say!

Joni, we use Baby Food too, but I always read the ingredients first. Usually we just buy the sweet potatoes and some other vegetables. Most baby foods just have the vegetable and water but the odd ones will have added onion powder and/or garlic powder, we don't buy those. wink.gif

Good luck and keep us posted Heidi! smile.gif
miloreggie
Joni-- the Gerber's infant foods (in the little containers/jars) do not have garlic or seasoning in them. (We have a baby so this is fresh in my mind)-- particularly the typical ones like the mixed veggies, sweet potatoes, carrots. I do remember the chicken and/or meat sticks having garlic seasoning but I'm sure you didn't stick a chicken stick in the birdie bed. smile.gif And Stendeck's mommy-- hopefully a case of pregnant nose getting to you? I remember when I was pregnant, I was TOTALLY repulsed by the smell of ground beef or spaghetti sauce w/ ground beef. Went to dinner one night with hubby and the minute they put the food on the table (spaghetti w/ meat sauce) and I smelled it-- I thought I would die. THEN we had to drive home with the windows down in the car because I was cooped up in the car with the leftovers. EWWW! Hopefully this is the case with Stendeck! We'll be watching for updates!

I wish quincys owner was on quincy has had a few yeast infections and one of the symptoms can be a funny odor on the breath. Its pretty easy to take care of if your fid does have it yet as others have said if your hubby doesnt smell anything it might be just your overly sensitive nose right now due to the fact you are expecting smile.gif
When I first got my U2 I freaked out because my U2 has a stinky breath I took him to the vet three times before asking the forum because my vet insisted it was normal for u2's and I know with quakers about the bad breath thing being a sign of illness but U2s do have a stinky breath naturally be lucky you dont have to smell my abbys breath *gag*

Ok so hubby now says he could smell it yesterday and I have looked into this yeast thing on here and have come to the conclusion he ate some gone over veggies as the bowl was left in all one day and one night over the weekend. Would the yeast have developed that quickly. It cant be a secondary infection relating to his kidney hes only 2 surly. So ACV it is then and should I just feed pellets and no veg til he smells better????? His poo did seem a little green to day and I noticed it on his perch which he never poos on so perhaps he is a little loose too.

Thank God I posted and thank god for you guys I would never have known.
Julie - could it be yeast with Harley?????

biggrin.gif biggrin.gif That's funny.

Maybe you both should eat some fresh parsley. That'll neutralize the garlic smell. tongue.gif

I don't think so Heidi....Thanks....Harley was checked over good when he was at the vet last with that garlic smell...Of course it is gone now...Fecal exam, etc.....
