Tequila was real sick this weekend, so first thing this morning we went back into the vet. She weighed in at 355, last week she was 392 sad.gif Although the weight today was with an empty crop, and she was anesthatised so it wasn't the most accurate weight...but either way she has lost a huge amount of weight over the last week. She is still not drinking much water either sad.gif But the vet pulled some blood and started her on Baytril...which brings me to my next question..

Any tips on giving her meds? If I squirt it in her mouth she pretty much just spits it out. I tried putting it on some apple this morning and she ate most of it, but I'm not sure if she got all of it. Baytril is pretty nasty tasting...

Man, she really nailed me when she was waking up, too. Just about took the tip of my thumb off rolleyes.gif

Did your vet not show you how to give the medicine?

Knowing Tequila, you're gonna have to towel her. Is this a several times a day type antibiotic?
Dark Angel
when will you get the results back for the bloodwork?
Baytril is something that I have never used. I have heard some controversy over the use of baytril mostly due to findings that it doesnt totally eliminate things like bacterial infections and because it makes it appear like the bird is getting better once off baytril birds tend to get sick again because it didnt eliminate it totally.
I am wondering I guess too what other peoples thoughts are on baytril and if they had heard the same things etc?

You are doing a good job in trial and error when it comes to finding the best way to administer medication. If the apple does seem to work keep doing it. I am sure someone else will have a better idea than me anyways.

Wishing your fid a speedy recovery!!!!

try mixing with a little apple juice - that always works for my lovie -
good luck!

Sorry to hear about Tequila...you may ask your vet about mixing it...it could mess up how effective the antibiotic wil be. Baytril is used quite often in birds.

I sure hope it's something simple! Please keep us posted.

When I had to medicate Jojo, I had to towel him. It was right after I got him. I'd let him on the floor, then kind of toss a towel over him. Then I'd wrap him like a burrito, and with him still on the floor I'd kind of use my knees to hold him still while I held his beak/head with one hand and squirted the meds in with the other. I learned pretty quick to hold his head after administering the meds or else I ended up wearing most of it when he shook his head. dry.gif I've been giving them applesauce in a syringe now, so I'm hoping that if I have to give him meds again I can mix it with the applesauce. Good luck, and I hope she gets to feeling better soon.

I think toweling/mixing are your best bets... I sure hope everything turns out okay.

Poor Tequila!

they didnt' give you flavored oral baytril? thats the kind we give our birds..some birds take it ok...i tend (all too's by the way) to give it to them in the beak, then tip the beak back a little and rub their throat, if they'll let ya..if they are birds we can't do that to, we give them shots. toweling would work. But the baytril we get is tutti-fruitti flavor, so it helps, lots of them like it..

I can't offer any tips but just want to say that I hope Tequila gets better.

I hope she gets better soon too.

Unfortunately it isn't the yummy kind of baytril...it is the really bitter nasty kind dry.gif I tasted it before I gave it to her and MAN is that stuff gross. She is being a trooper about taking it, though..I have been dripping it onto a small peice of apple or avicake and so far that is working *knock on wood* Thankfully since she is so small so only gets 0.2 mL per dose, which is about 3 drops.

As far as her weight, she is VERY small anyhow...I think a healthy weight for her would probably be between 430-450 grams. She has always been pretty thin, but these last few weeks have just been brutal (on both of us!). I am drained...I was a mess at the vet, I just started bawling blush.gif thankfully since I work with these people they pretty much know by now that I am a nutjob anyway laugh.gif

I just wish she would be healthy sad.gif This is really hard...and now my thumb really hurts!!

sad.gif Hope Tequila (and your thumb!) feels better soon!
It sounds like you're doing a good job getting the meds down her, hopefully she doesn't figure it out and she continues to take it without any problems.

Keep us posted and Get Well Soon Tequila! smile.gif
