Full Version: It's Me The Newbie...
Quaker Parrots Forum > Welcome! > Introductions
Birdlover_24
Hello everyone. I just signed up yesterday in here so i'm really new and just wanted to introduce myself.

So here's my story... I had a lovebird named Dante which was
my budddy and my everything cause i live alone and he recently died about a month or so ago and i was absolutely crushed and heartbroken. sad.gif

So, i did alot of research for a while and fell in love with the idea of owning a quaker wub.gif for a pet the second time around knowing it would take alot to beat my lovebirds personality.

So i recently purchased a baby green quaker from a breeder and i'm anxiously waiting the arrival of my new little one. biggrin.gif He's almost done being weaned. I'm very very excited and eager to start training it and teaching it to do tricks. So... since i have never owned a quaker before this is going to be a whole new experience for me. unsure.gif If anyone can give me some helpful tips and some help on what to do to make my new buddy feel comfortable & safe when he arrives and make it a good experience then i would really appreciate it as i dont know what to expect. ohmy.gif Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum! smile.gif You will soon find out this place is quite addicting and will begin to consume all of your time! laugh.gif
Sorry to hear about Dante. sad.gif

Quakers are definitely amazing birds and you will soon find out how fun they can be. The best way to learn things, I find, is to go through the archives and read though past posts. If you have any questions, before or after your Q arrives, then feel free to ask away, everyone is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable! smile.gif I believe the best piece of advice you could get about Quakers is Patience is key.

Do you have any names picked out yet or are you waiting to see what the little green chicken will be like?

Welcome!

Welcome!

Sorry to hear about your lovebird! You will find your new QP to be quite different in personality and will delight you daily. There is rarely a day goes by that Chica doesn't make me laugh so hard I have to sit down, she is such a little clown. She is also very loving and a great kisser.

You might want to get a copy of Mattie Sue Athan's book, Guide to the Quaker Parrot. It is inexpensive and available at most bird stores -- or they can order it.

There is so much information on this site that reading lots and lots of the prior posts will answer most of your questions before you even know what to ask.

I agree with Impdujour -- your friends will have to learn tolerance laugh.gif I carry pics of Chica but not of my daughter. Hmmmmmmm.

If you want a bird that is easily trained i dont think a quaker is up your alley for that. They can be trained to do simple things. Large birds are the ones that can do all the other big tricks, bu you will love your quaker.

really? so quakers arnt easily trained? only simplr things? well thats disappointing. I'm really excited so i will love my bird anyways regardless of what it can do. Theres this lady who has a quaker parrot and her bird can do crazy things. It picks up this baby doll and puts the doll in this mini baby carriage and pushes the doll in the stroller. laugh.gif Now thats a trick.

Welcome to the forum!!!

A fid is a feathered kid, or furry kid, or finned kid!!

As for Quakers not being easily trained, I have to disagree with that one. Quakers are just as intelligent as their larger counterparts.

I have seen Quakers play hoops (tossing a ball into a tiny basket), ride a skateboard, a girl I know was even teaching her QP to ride rollerskates!! laugh.gif So it can be done!

Also, they can have fabulous talking ability as well. My QP knows at least 80 words and/or phrases and is constantly chattering. There have been many times where we can have a conversation. smile.gif

So don't think that Quakers can't be trained, because they can. Just depends on how much work you put into the training and what exactly it is that you want to do.

Thank you. Its great to be welcomed. so a fid is a feathered kid eh.. laugh.gif I like that. That makes sense. Then my Good im glad to hear that quakers can be trained and are intelligent smile.gif cause i bought this little basketball court and i want to train my quaker to put the ball in the hoop on the court. biggrin.gif It WILL be done.WOW ride a skateboard and ride rollerskates. Thats impressive. yours knows 80 words and phrases..thats fantastic. How did you get yours
to say so many things? Im soo excited now to get my new baby.
Dark Angel
I have been exposed to alot of birds in my lifetime and I personally think quakers are the best companion parrots. I think they are easy to train and eager to learn and consistantly learn through out their lifetimes. Mine is still learning new things and they are quite clever. I am sure yours will give you great joy just like mine does.

fid is a feathered kid

Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you. Have you thought of a name for your new QP?
Birdlover_24
Ya i have a few names for my QP but not totally sure yet. I was thinking either beckham or hunter. Have any ideas?

Hi and welcome to the forum

Don't believe the people who say you can't train a quaker tongue.gif

Training is only limited to your imagination and of course the props need to be the right size.

I clicker train all my birds, and they love it, and learn so fast.
Birdlover_24
Thanks. I paln on training my bird to do alot. I used to have a lovebird named Dante but he just died just over a month ago now. Was heartbroken and i used to clicker train him to. I love it and it works well.I plan on doing the same thing to my QP when he arrives.

Well I missed this but welcome to the forum! It's nice to see another Canadian and great to have someone else from the lower mainland!

When is your baby coming home?

I've had my QP for almost 4 years now, he's my best little bud and never stops amazing me with all the crazy things he does.

If you need any help finding an avian vet or anything, feel free to PM me.
LuvMyHarley1
I think the posters have covered your questions quite well, so I'll just say I would like to Welcome you and your new soon-to-be tweet....I like Hunter and Beckman....Any idea how you chose the name.... tongue.gif Just curious....

Oh I would like to mention when you do get your baby, find you a good avian vet for his first birdie check up...It isn't required but is a good idea to have a vet just in case you may need one in the future and you will be already on the books, so to speak..

Wishing you many happy years with Hunter/Beckham... wink.gif Do let us know when you get him/her (your little fid)... ohmy.gif

Congrats on your new baby! Post photos when you can -- we love them! Plenty of info and knowledgable people on here to give you guidance!
