hello

I posted on the board ealier that i am having a allergic reaction to my baby quaker....i just got him a few weeks ago...i found a product called allerpet..has anyone heard of allerpet or tried it?..its used with a cloth to wipe the bird to elimate the dander...any help would greatly be appreciated. I got the hepa filter air purifier that you guys reccomended.....so i hope it helps and i rehomed the budgies today....so i hope it makes a difference with only one bird in the house...and i think quakers dont have as much dust and dander as budgies...giving up my quaker is not an option to me....he is such a little clown..and we love him alot.

thank you so much

Hi

I don't think quakers have much 'dander'. I know cockatiels do, and I bath mine quite often in the shower. These guys don't seem to volunteer to bath, but they love a nice soft shower.

Of course Shrek loves his showers, so I have no problem there.

Hello,

I had the same situation as you. I was having bad allergic reactions in my house after I had added all my birds to my family. I got fed up with my allergies and went to my ear, nose and throat doctor and got allergy testing done. Come to find out, I wasn't allergic to my precious Quaker wub.gif but...I am allergic to his poop. blink.gif Go figure right. Apparently the doctor told me that over a couple of days, alot of birds even though they are perfectly healthy, there poop grows mold and thats what most are allergic to. So I just clean out the bottom of his cage every other day now and I am doing alot better. I don't know if you allergic to the same, but I thought I would just pass that along.

Also I have read up alot on allergies to birds and most of the sprays and powders you can use to get rid of allergens are lethal to birds. I use a brand called E-Cover to clean all my birds dishes and cages. All their products are 100% plant based so they wont poison your birds or your water if you have a well.

This might help you a little on keeping the poop cleaned up...When I had Joy, my Quaker (she passed away 2 yrs ago in Feb) her cage was the perfect size to put 2 cloth place mats on the grate...1/2 way during the day, I would turn them over and at the next morning I put 2 more down...you don't have to be wiping down anything...you just throw them in the washer with hot water and mild laundry detergent..works great..I keep 2 right under Gabbys' cage door and it catches most of the poop.....I would think daily cleaning would be better for you, but wear a mask while doing it. You can also use unscented baby wipes to clean up poop on the cage bars and seed catcher or the floor. These are very handy...

I am allergic to bird feathers/dust along with LOTS of pollen etc..so, I give myself the allergy shots and they are working great..I really react to those ionic-type air cleaners..My physical therapy office has one and my nose & eyes run the whole time I am there..I told my physical therapist that they are the worst and she said her allergist recommended them to her...gggggrrrrrr!!! I told her what reaction birds have to them and she just shrugged it off..oh well...I guess I will take a zyrtec before going today...

Are you going to be getting the shots?

The shots should help you alot. When you were tested did they specifically say it was bird dander or feathers or ???

I dont really know much about the product but once you start getting the shots in a few months you will see a big difference.

In the meantime just try to keep the cages clean and use a mask when you are doing it as well as use the mask when you vaccum sweep etc. I know its a royal pain and doesnt look too glamerous but a face mask does help lots.
