You all are going to get sick and tired of me but... What do I look for when I go to see the breeder??? What kind of questions do I ask? She told me that he or she would be able to step up. That sounds good to me. But, do I need to be on the lookout for anything in particular? My husband asked me "How do we know she's a reputable breeder?" Thanks in advance. Gail and family

First step is to ask for references smile.gif A reputable breeder won't hesitate to give you references. Also, check for the cleanliness of the aviary (if it is a closed aviary, don't panic, as this isn't unusual) or the area where the babies are kept.

As what type of diet the babies are on. If babies are currently clipped, ask the breeder how long they were able to fly before s/he clipped them. Ask if the babies have been taken into the vet (again, don't panic if she says no, as most breeders don't do this). Ask if there is a guarantee on the bird (if there isn't, RUN!! LOL). If there is a guarantee, ask how long it is and what it covers.

Don't feel as if you are asking too many questions of the breeder. It is your right and if s/he seems to be getting perturb by the amount of questions, then you might want to pass. Also, ask if you can contact the breeder at any time if you have any questions or concerns.

Ask if they are fully weaned...a reputable breeder will know which clutch the baby came from, the date of bird, should have a birth certificate etc..if not, then I would be leary...The breeder I got Joy from, had her in her house, but my husband went out into the avairy and said it was not a good situation...But I had fallen in love with Joy..she had a genetic problem and the vet said it was probably from inner-breeding(letting brothers and sisters breed etc)...There was a post on the other day where the breeder didn't even know the hatch date, and had a bunch of babies all together..this is NOT good, IMHO...
Why don't you try to get a baby from Andi? or is this a possibility..I would go by referrals....call them and ask..if the breeder doesn't want to talk about things like that, then just run.....they should be glad to give you names etc...
When we got Gabby, she had a health certificate, hatch certificate and DNA testing certificate...we had, I believe, 30 days to have her checked at our vet...
Keep us posted...
