Horatio went to the avian vet for the first time today. He was a good bird and let the vet handle him without a struggle. I was not sure what to get done on a first visit but the vet said that what she likes is to do a complete history on the bird (cage, eating habits, food preferences, types of foods, amounts of treats, type of toys, time out of the cage etc.) and then weigh him and do a complete external examination including his heart and lungs, examine his mouth, ears, vent and feathers. She did not want to do blood work until the next visit as she thinks all of this is too much for a small bird in one go. We will go back in a month for blood tests.
He was such a good boy, her only complaint was that we feed him too many vegetables and he is not getting enough pellets (I know that he has got to prefer his vegetable dish over his pellets). So we have to decrease the size of his vegetable dish in the morning. It was nice to find a vet who really seemed to understand birds, even after all of the examination, Horatio still stepped up for her.
I forgot to add, he was found to be a healthy happy little man
Here are a couple of new pictures of our gardening bird.
