Quarantine is over and Kayak gets to meet the rest of the Quark flock. So how have they all reacted to his boisterous youthful curiosity? Read on...

Funnily enough, despite the tantrums she has thrown at the inclusion of other birds in the Quark Flock, she hasn't been too upset by Kayak's arrival. She's been a bit put out by the lack of attention she's been receiving during the week. Britta had to feed Kayak every hour for the first week he was with us, so much of her time was taken up. I tried to make up for it by spending lots of time with her every evening and at weekends.

Given the chance, corvids will take other birds' eggs, of course, so we were apprehensive about their first meeting in case . In an effort to avoid conflict, their first encounter was strictly controlled and took place in the park last Sunday. She was on her harness, of course, and Kayak was in the Adventure Pack. She seemed curious but uncertain. When we spoke enthusiastically to her, made all our silly "cuddly noises" and suggested she give him a kiss, she seemed satisfied that he posed no immediate danger and put her beak through the bars to give him a nip on the beak.

She's quite good with him and doesn't bother him as long as I am not around. When I'm at home, though, she's very defensive of me and will chase him off if he makes any attempt to come to me. It's not the kind of assault that Inenekazi or George get, though, so we're satisfied that he's safe.

We have made a point of trying to trigger his babyish begging reflex when she's around, simply to impress upon her that he is just a baby and therefore no threat.

Feed me!

The Wild Bunch
Induna and Inenekazi seem apprehensive around him and a little on edge, but haven't made any attempt to attck him. They pretty much ignore him unless he gets too close, at which time, they'll fluff themselves up and look "big and strong". Kayak takes the hint.

Parrot food – bleah! You mean they eat this stuff...?

Insect
Corvids eat insects! wacko.gif

Kayak's favourite game is chasing Insect around. He's the only bird in the flock taht is smaller than he is, so he bullies him a bit. Insect, however, will only tolerate a certain amount of this treatment before he strikes back with a sharp nip that drives off his assailant. It's all pretty much in good humour, so we're not worried. Corvids are very playful and it's obvious that play is his only aim. But we keep an eye on them anyway.

Where'd he go...?

George
This is the strangest relationship in the strange world of the Quark Flock: George and Kayak appear to get on very well! I took the day off yesterday, and these two spent the whole afternoon downstairs with me.

"...pss pss pss. And then she said pss pss pss..."

Thanks! I enjoy writing about the small doings of the Quark Flock. I just wish that there wasn't such a low limit on the number of images that can be posted. I had to cut several out before I could post it. You'll have to see the same post on AnAfricanGrey to get the full story!
