Hello, i just got my bird last weekend, his name is petey, and he has been eating less kaytee exact hand feeding formula since sunday and is eating on his own. the owner told me he is about 8 weeks, but he is pretty big, i will include a pic soon. my problem is when i want to feed him the hand feeeding formula, he never wants to come out of his cage, i have to grab him and pull him out gently and he nibbles on me. he likes to perch on my finger out of the cage, but tries to find a way back to his cage. my guess is he feels really safe on or near his cage. i try to get him to go up on my finger to get him out but i guess he still is not comfortable with this. please help and give me advice. one other thing, i would like to know a good diet for him, like what kind of food could i maybe pick up at a pet store or something like that.

zupreem roudybush are a couple of brands that are pretty good.
Alot of times the bird will have a preference.
What does your vet recommend?
The one thing I have learned with birds is to not force them out of their cage it usually keeps them from not trusting. Usually what I do with a new bird is keep them company around and near the cage leaving the cage open and eventually they will come out on their own...maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow but soon enough they start to trust more and more and become more daring and just come out. When that happens and you are handling them take them out of sight of their cages to another room to be exact so that they cant see their safety zone/home. I also like to tell ppl to keep an eye on their fid look for signs they are tired of have had enough and bring them back to their cages immediatly. That way they start to identify going with you will be fun and they will be more willing to come out etc...
good luck
