I just come home to learn that my hubby had Gizmo on his shoulder when he went downstairs. Gizmo flew off his shoulder and into car grease. I am thinking of trying dawn dish detergent on him. Anyone with any suggestions?

Definitely Dawn and warm water, but make sure you rinse it off real good. Poor baby!I almost had a heart attack I thought you meant hot cooking grease at first! Know of a little cockatiel that had feet burnt.

I would wash rinse wash rinse wash rinse with dawn liquid until all oil is gone. Then I would call the vet because motor oil is toxic and if the bird has tried to preen themselves and got the oil in its beak
I would def do a follow up with a vet.
good luck

Yep yep!! I agree with both posters. Definitely follow up with a vet visit and watch for signs of illness, be prepared to take that little bird into an emergency vet if needed.

I also agree, warm water, and dawn dish washing liquid.... work it into his feathers and then rinse...and do it again.. and again, till its all out...
How badly did he get covered? Poor little guy....I'll bet your husband is just sick about it too....
Definitely follow up with a vet as soon as you can.
Good luck and keep us posted please

I almost didn't open this thread. I read the title and my heart started beating real fast. I am so glad it was not hot oil like I thought. You got some good advice. Keep us up to date on the outcome.

Another semi heart attack here. Dawn is what they use on oil spill victim birds too. (Follow the link to Lee Fox if you want more details.) Gizmo okay now?

I found this site and logged in cuz my bird fell into a pot of water....which had cooled off on the stove. The grease on top of the water was almost solid. I took the advice given on the threads........ and wiped off the feathers with diluted Dawn. I don't believe I got off as much as I should have. The breast feathers are matted. My bird is sleeping in the cage with a heating pad on top and the cover prevents a draft. When I checked with a flashlight, Poochie was quivering. Was it the flashlight that scared him or is he cold. The thermometer in the cage shows 79 degrees

Update on Gizmo. I used the dawn dish liquid several times. I finally used a soft tooth brush and dawn dish liquid and rinsed with warm water. He was so scared. I used a warm hair dryer on low to help warm him up and dry him off. He has the most gorgous, bright green feathers.
Actually, this experience has calmed him down a little. I am not sure if it was the fact that he had to handle him and was as gentle as possible or that he knew something was wrong and we tried to fix it. He is more loving now and comes over to get kisses and give them a lot. All is well. Thanks so much for the reply's. We appreciate everyones input and willingness to help. Cindy
