I am getting a quaker that was found here in Phoenix and so far no one has owned up to him/her. It is at a pet store here in town and they are friends of mine but they do not want to keep it in the store. So they are giving it to me. I will keep trying to find it's owner but until then I will work with it as it does not want to much attention, we do not know how long it was in the wild.
Now for the question.. Does anyone have a quaker with a bad over grown beak? If so what have you done. Besides taken it to the vet. I have heard that is it caused by liver problems is that so. I will be taking it to my vet but wanted a heads up on this poor little quy..

How severely is it over grown. Most often if a birds beak is severely overgrown, its from either the lack of chewable toys, wood etc...things that they can actually use to wear down the beak... or malocclusion where the top Mandible and the bottom mandible do not meet and mesh correctly, and 3rdly because of Fatty liver disease. I have actually seen a couple different species of birds with beaks so over grown that they actually grew into their breast and eventually died because of it...Because by the time the owners were convinced to get them to a vet they were too far gone.

If you feel that the beak is truly over grown get it to the vet have them do a CBC and check the liver...because yes, the liver does effect the growth of the beak.

It really is not that bad but it is still to long. I have the others and not a problem but they have plenty to chew on and keep them shorter too. I am going to get him into the vet and have him checked out for the fatty liver disease, but outside of that he looks to be in good health but Dr. Ansum will let me know right away what she thinks and have him checked out..

Thank You Andie's Mom..
