I'd like to start with sayin hello to everyone I don't currently have any pets but my boyfriend has quite a zoo dogs,cats,guinnea pigs, sugar gliders,fish,a hawk,and soon to be a quaker parrot in august. He suggested i sign up here to perhaps learn a few things about all these sweet critters of which im sure i will. So i don't know what questions to ask but im sure as they come up I'll be asking and possibly drive him crazy hehe thats my job isn't it??hehe ~ Best wishes n i hope all your babies are healthy n happy!!

Quakers can turn quickly into one person birds, so if you want to be able to socialize with the bird and play with it, make sure you take an active part in being around him right from the beginning

I agree with Carrie~Anne, make sure you help a lot with your new Quaker or else it won't like you... and you don't want that! It is possible for them to bond to more than one person, but you have to interact a lot with it as well.

I'd like to start of by saying, "It's not IF you're going to get bit, its WHEN you get bit" With that being said...Its important not to make a big fuss over being bitten, because Quakers are Drama Queens/Kings and anything they can do to get a reaction from someone they will. So if you're holding the bird and it bites you...try your hardest not to make any noise and push into the bite so it doesn't hurt so much...If you make noise or a fuss, they will think of that as positive reinforcement and continue to do it to get a reaction...

Ahhh the infamous hawk (His name is Chicken) hehehe. I was driving with a friend of mine and noticed something on the side of the hwy. So yea being the nosey individual I am I stopped the car and got out LOL. He was just sitting there when I approached him. Didn't make ANY attempt to fly or run. He was holding his wing at an odd angle, so I assumed it was broken. I had a jacket in the backseat and put it over him (yes I value my fingers )and put him into the car. We drove immediately to my friend Chris who is a vet in Windsor and whom I did my internship with. He set the hawks wing and kept him at the clinic for a few days because he was badly dehydrated. During that time I had a lot of research to do. I knew nothing about them. Chris got incontact with me and informed me that the bird would never fly again making it impossible for him to survive. He asked me what I was going to do. So I went and picked him up. He lived in my washroom for the day I had to build him a proper cage. I've had him for about 3 yrs now. I have to say it's been hell We have both overcome the "trust" issue I took a lot of nasty bites and scratches. I hafta pay to keep him (laws and all that)but it is well worth it though

what state do you live in? i know MI is pretty fussy about who owns a raptor. I loved it when i got to get "hands on" with the wildlife that would come in when i was working as a vet tech. in 9 years i got to see all kinds of cool things like that!!! *sigh* somedays i really miss it....

Have you joined any Falconry clubs? I know Chicken can't fly, but it might be cool to join a club and learn about that kinda stuff.

I am totally jealous!! I so badly want to take a Falconry course. They offer one on Vancouver Island, and one day I'm gonna go and take it, but it is out of the question for the moment.
