I saw one yesterday and he was a beautiful green with a little yellow ring around his neck. I wanted him so badly. I want to research them first. Does anyone have one or know anything about them?

There are several sub species of ring necks...Alexandrians as well as Mustache Parakeets and 3 or for others that aren't as common. and to which I can't remember the names off the top of my head.

There are many color mutations of the "Ringneck" and I believe only the males get the ring...and it turns dark after they reach a year old...Don't quote me on that...but I'm pretty sure that's how it is...There are a few on here that own Ring necks so I'm sure they will be along to answer more questions....

Glad to hear your doing your homework before you get them...

They are NOISY Birds...they have a pretty loud shrill call...so Again if you are in an apartment, you might want to re consider...but that's just my opinion.

Thanks, Connie!

The ringneck is only one of many specicies of the Asiatic Parrots. Alexandrine Parrikeets are great birds, and excellent talkers from my experience. They have a body just a tad bit bigger then a quaker, but once you add the HUGE tail, they are like 24 inchs total length in some cases. Indian ringnecks can be a bit bitty and tend to go wild quite easy, but are STUNNING !!

I have an Indian Ring Neck. it took me 6 months of getting CHUNKS taken out of my arms to tame her down, but now she is a real lover bird. She coos and purrs at me smile.gif She is also VERY possessive of me and will attack any of the other fids that are on me, so I really have to be very careful when she is flying around. She is fully flighted (the only one that I haven't even attempted to clip!) and will come find me and give me kisses to wake me up if I take a nap in the afternoon.

She has that big red beak, very pretty, but very lethal as well! She can definitely HURT you when she bites!!

Here she is taking a bath in the kitchen sink...you can see her wonderful coloring when she fans out her wings and tail
Splish Splash

And here she is today ... 1st time in the SHOWER by herself ... she's always been afraid of the shower perch and wouldn't go near it! Nala's 1st shower by herself

She is a bit larger than my QP and doesn't interact well with any of the other fids, although my parakeet is in LOVE with her, even learning her flock call (so funny hearing that call coming out of that little body! biggrin.gif ). When Emma does her flock call, it is funny, when SHE does it .. OMG is it loud and screechy! She is the one that gets me to yell SHUT UP! when she gets going! Very loud, very shrill ... not a bird to get if you have close complaining neighbors!

If you are considering getting an IRN or Alexandrine (even larger than the IRN but similar in coloring) you may want to check out the IRN forum and see what others say about them IRN Forum

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I have already applied to that forum. Can't wait to get accepted. I'm sorry that I cannot view videos (dialup) so do you have any pictures?

The bird I saw at the petshop was an IRN. smile.gif

This is Nala...when she is in her lover bird mode, she does the neck kink thing and just coos and purrs at me!

Emma is my keet and he just LOVES her, even tho before she turned into a lover, she bit one of his toes off! sad.gif Poor baby! He's fine, and she's not such a crabby fid anymore.

Thanks for the pics! Your bird is beautiful! Sorry about your little one's toe. sad.gif

Hi Angela!!

I was just looking at your other post, the one about the amount of time you are spending with your tiel. I really wouldn't recommend an IRN for you if you can't give the bird more than 30 minutes out of cage time a day. They really do tend to get quite standoffish if you don't work with them on a regular basis. JMO.

I have 3 ringnecks. 2 IRNs' and an african ringneck. I think the male IRN's are so beautiful with their black ring around their neck.
My female IRN is very bossy, but she's not so loud anymore. The female IRN's can be bossy and quite frankly, a bully. My female ARN is sweet though and has fallen in love with my hahn's macaw. She has big beautful eyes and is a little bit smaller than my IRN's.
The ringnecks are thinkers and will notice everything. They are very intelligent birds. My male is quiet but he likes to talk. He says "Ringos' a pretty bird uh huh" and "Ringos a goood boy" too cute. He also whistles the Andy Griffith show tune. He will wolf whistle at all the sexy new birds that come into his site and tell them what a pretty boy he is. He's a hopeless flirt. He says other things when in the mood, but those are his favorites. He also does what I call "the dangle". He grabs the cage with his beak and lets go of the cage with his legs and dangles his legs there and lets out a caw. It's cute as he straightens his legs all down while he does this. They will never cease to amaze you
My ARN is compassionate and will help any bird in need and show concern. It's precious to watch.
Best of luck with your decision
