Hello,

My quaker was born in March of this year wub.gif . The breeder told me that he would eventually just not want to take his formula and he would be weaned. They also told me that he probally wouldn't finish the bag of formula because of his age already. He probally has a day or two left of formula. So I was wondering, is there a good age to go by to stop the hand feeding or should I keep on with the feeding. Thanks for any Info you might have...

So he's around 12 weeks? Give or take a few weeks?

How many feedings is he on a day? And how much in each feeding is he getting? Is he eating seeds/pellets too?

Generally, I'm a firm believer in letting the bird wean themselves. That means keep offering the formula when they want it. But if he isn't eating any solid foods, then you have a bit of a problem.

By this age, he should only be on one or two handfeedings a day. He should be eating a good deal of solid foods on his own (whether that's seeds or pellets and lots of fresh foods).

Right now he is only on one feeding that I give him in the morning. He eats pellets (kaytee exact parrot food) that on one side of his cage I add a little water to it to make it softer, and on the other side of his cage I have a food bowl with just dry pellets. He eats out of both. Plus I mix in some fruits and veggies as well. He's spoiled biggrin.gif But he still takes his formula. I only give him seed when he is out of the cage and only on occasion...

I really don't think you have much to worry about then smile.gif

I would try to offer some food to him before offering his formula in the morning. You could offer cooked oatmeal, or mashed sweet potatoes...both of those tend to work well on weaning birds off of formula. See if he takes that food first. If not, then give him the formula biggrin.gif

Thanks for the tip. I will try that then and let you know how it works. Thanks!!
