Hello,

I have just noticed - after the fact sad.gif wacko.gif wub.gif - that when I thought my quaker was sitting quietly on my lap, that he was actually chewing little holes in my t-shirts. What makes them do this? Is there a way to stop him rather than keep him away from my clothes? I'm guessing no, but thought I'd ask. He's wrecked a few shirts on me
Thanks
Pappagallo
Yeah they do that. My sun conure was the master of putting holes in my clothes.

My quaker and sun are both 3 now and don't do that as much. They did it more when they were younger.

Just don't where your favorite shirt when he is sitting on you. Heehee

I have "bird shirts" that are denim with collars. My QP gets all excited when I put one on because she knows it's time to sit with Mommy! She removes the buttons systematically and tries to chew holes in them. But because they're a litte more sturdy than your ordinary T-shirt they're still in good condition. I do have some white cottons that have gone the way of the Dodo 'cause she has done what yours is doing. Good question about what makes them do it though. I'm not really sure either. Hmmm. huh.gif

Morgan loves chewing on shirts. Especially after a bath. He has chewed holes in almost everything cloth. Like was said already I have bird shirts. I just get an old shirt, cut it up the middle and you have a bird shirt.
Casey's Mom
Yep, we have a clothes chewer here too! blink.gif Lots of holes in all my shirts! I always have to be extra careful when she is on my shoulder because a giant hole will appear is about 0.3 second! blink.gif dry.gif laugh.gif

I have asked this question before, right after we got Casey and I got a lot of good suggestions! smile.gif

My Quaker just likes feeling the fabric with his tongue...he doesn't really put holes in my clothes. My Sun, however, is a whole other story laugh.gif
LuvMyHarley1
laugh.gif I got a giggle out of these responses....Because I have a chewer too...Guess you can say that is the quaker style...

I have two towels and when I use one of them to wrap Harley in after his bath, the first thing he will do is start chewing as far around as his little head will turn...Now I call them the holy roly towels....Oh and I have plenty of shirts and pants that has the quaker mark in them...So I'm like some of the others, just wear a certain outfit when snuggling with the little monster.... biggrin.gif
Gizmo #1
Gizmo is more of a hair chewer. He sometimes nibs on my sleeves.

Double cloth and clothes chewing experience here too!

Shah has just developed the chewing bug. He sits on my shoulder and chews whatever clothing I am wearing. I also have bird shirts but he insists on sitting on my shoulder before I go to work so we can whisper sweet nothings to each other.

My Paulie has chewed holes in EVERY teeshirt I have!!! Her cage has the drop down platform on the front, she stands there, just shoulder high to me and in a blink of any eye, she has chewed a hole before I can stop her.

I have only 2 teeshirt left without holes, I wear those when I go to the store, the vet, etc. Yesterday I brought her back from the vet, she reached for my hole-less shirt and I pulled away, I've only got 2 I can wear out!!! I had on my favorite without a hole and she almost nailed it also.

I actually cut up one of my teeshirts, I put a toy hanger on a piece and hung it in her cage. Yes, I can see her go over and chew it-LOL. Bren

haha good idea about haning the tee shirt in the cage! lol

My QP chews too my husb comes home from work with his nice works shirts and he goes to start! Were learning get the shirt off right away. These fellas are chew-a-haulics and crap-o-matics ROFL

Im gonna try the T-Shirt toy idea!

Oliver chews on my T-shirts too. She also chews through any necklaces I have on. I usually wear the ones with the big shells and she like to take the shells off them.. Must be out of date or something lol.

I'm lucky in that department. Mine has never chewed on my clothes, and has never messed with my jewlery. I can't paint my fingernails though. Oh well. I can live with that.
Levi And Echo
I too have many many old T shirts with holes in them.
Echo was really really bad about that for a while. I found that if I told him "No" as he was latching on to my shirt would catch his attention. If he went about biting a hole in my shirt anyways he lost his shoulder to perch on, was removed and placed on his play stand. It took about a month so of consistently doing this but he has finally given it up. I've bought a new collection of T shirts over the past 3 months and no holes as of yet.

He will still get testy some times by reaching down with his beak and gripping my shirt but he lets go when I give him a firm "No"

Birds explore with their beaks and tongue. I too have some holy shirts that I usually just end up wearing around the birds. To them they are just helping me all the rage and a trend setter. Has anyone seen the birdie necklaces that people wear to keep their fids occupied while on the shoulder?

I have seen that necklace Impy... It's a necklace with plastic and wood beads and different other shaped things on it. We did have one. Echo killed it in about 2 months time. laugh.gif After that I removed the living parts and used them to make a new toy.
The nice thing about those are they have access to them while on chest or shoulder. The bad thing about them is theres a risk of getting chomped on by mistake when they grab a hold of it. blink.gif

I have a bird shirt too... i sewed different colored buttons on the shoulder, upper back, and upper chest parts to keep manhattan occupied. He seems to enjoy it.

I thnk clothes-chewing is embedded in the QP genetic code. smile.gif Ours also is OBSESSED with chewing on clothes. The bird shirt is a good idea. Might have to try it.

I too have a shirt chewing quaker. In fact she caused me a bad sun burn. I wore a shirt she had put a couple large holes in while taking down a pool my uncle gave me. that night i after changing my shirt i couldn't figure why my shoulder hurt so bad. I had burn patterns matching the hole she had chewed into my shirt. Now the rest of this year i have to go around with this strange pattern of tan on my shoulders. Now every time i hear the first pop of her starting to chew i tell her no and cover the spot and she will stop for a little bit and try again. wink.gif
