I went to the grocery store today and brought home a variety of fresh stuff for the fids. After examining the cage, I realized I had no place to put them. Then it hit me I could make one out of a large paper clip. So there ya have it. All ya need to do is unfold the clip and turn one end into itself to create a base so the items do not fall off. Now you are ready to add the goodies. Be sure to leave enough room at the top to turn under for a hook. Before you add the yummies, wash the clip to remove dirt or germs.

Just remembered I had a couple of questions. What age do the male and female quaker and cockatiel mature and are capable of laying eggs (females of course).

That's all for now, can't wait to hear from ya'll.

That sounds like a good idea but could you add a photo of it. Sometimes I need that kinds of thing. smile.gif

Like a metal paper clip? I'm not too sure if I would use something like that. I would just be too worried about metal toxicity.

Quakers and Cockatiels can lay eggs as early as 10 to 12 months of age. I would highly discourage this though. For breeding purposes, I feel that female Quakers and Tiels shouldn't be set up for breeding until they are about two years old. So even though a bird lays an egg, it doesn't mean they should be given a mate and allowed to breed. One of my hens started laying eggs at around 11 months old, but it wasn't until she turned two that I set her up with a mate.

Yes, we do the skewer thing too with vegetables and fruits except we use wooden stir sticks to secure them to the cage, more fid friendly I believe. wink.gif

Here are the photos. I only put veggies on this one. You can mix fruits and veggies together or keep them sepersate. Some of these can be made up ahead of time and hung in the fridge. I would wait to put things on it that would tend to wilt once it is cut up.

I also reused an old toy no one played with any more. I had bought it from petsmart and it had a bell at the bottom which I left. Wicket had chewed the wood (pop sickle stick) off of it and I just took off the round rubber balls.I may have a picture of the toy before I took it apart that I can post so ya'll can see what I did.

Hope your 4th of July holiday has been a safe one.
Tootles,

I have heard of using wooded skewers but i did not have any so I improvised. I also stayed in the room to make sure they ate on the veggies and not the clips.

Thanks for the information on sexual maturaty. I don't plan on breeding Wicket. She is getting close to 10 months. Since I have not had her sexed and am guessing she is a she, I am curious so I can watch for any behavioral changes.

Thanks again,
