My mom also suggested a cockatiel, and he has agreed that a cockatiel would be great. Plus, there are so many color varieties to choose from... just not blue, hehe.

Now, for those of you with cockatiels, I have a question. I want to buy him a book on cockatiels, but am not sure which one would be the best? I'd appreciate suggestions, please blush.gif

I plan on having him read it before the summer is over, so that he has a little "knowledge under his belt"... also figured it's one way to see how serious he is about wanting one, lol.

I bought a book called Cockatiels for Dummies after reading the suggestion in Birdtalk magazine. It's fun, imformative, basic, and quite helpful both as a preparative read and later as a reference. Good luck! I have a pied whitefaced cockatiel named Cooper. He's my joy! Your son will love having a cockatiel. Good luck! Let us know what color/sex you end up with. smile.gif

You might want to consider a male to start. In Cockatiels they are the better talkers and whistlers, so he's likely to get a charge out of theat. You also avoid the possibility of losing a young boys pet to egg bionding, which I believe is particularly problematic with Cockatiels.

And don't forget a tiel will benefit just as much as other parrots from a pelleted diet.

Thanks for the tip! Oooooh, I LOVE the whitefaced cockatiels. Kyle (my son) likes the look of them, too... I'm assuming that a couple of months can change alot of things, so we'll see what happens, hehe. He's pretty much like his momma, though (sucker for all animals) so I'm not expecting him to forget about it, but who knows.

I will definitely let everyone know what happens, though!

I agree with UZ, a male will be better. Whitefaces are beautiful!! I have two male Whitefaces and I love how they look.

I also think the 'Cockatiels for Dummies' would be a great book. I haven't read it myself, but heard lots about it.
