Just wanting to know if its normal for my 5 week old baby to shiver and pant sometimes? He seems be doing fine eating and cuddling, and loves attention. I'm just a little worried about the shivering, the temp seems fine in the house.

When you say eating..are you still giving him formula? sounds pretty young to me to be fully weaned and having no formula feedings. If you are not that may be part of his prob..He may be hungry. And that young he may have to have some extra heat yet.

I agree with Kate.....also probably a Vet check is in order. You might want to also call your breeder and explain it to them. Maybe they also could help you out. Just my opinion.

At 5 weeks its probably still a feeding response or the "baby Quake" Is it going on all the time or just when you approach the cage. As was mentioned previously, it he isn't still being fed hand feeding formula he's probably hungry...Most of the time babies don't fully wean until they're at least 7 to 8 weeks old very rarely will you have one that weans out at 5 weeks. I'd call and talk to your breeder and maybe take him back to them and have them totally finish weaning him for you.

At 5 weeks he still need to be handfed at least every four hours. So if your not doing that you need to take him back to where you got him from. Unless you know how to handfed.

He is down to 2 to 3 feedings a day (Yes, still on baby formula) and trying to pick at some millet. I have shut my AC off and it is really confortable in our home- not to hot, not cold. He doesn't shiver all the time just when he is picked up and after eating.Breeder tells me to feed him only every 8 hours--------------any input on this? Thanks

In my opinion if he's still needing 3 feedings a day...he shouldn't have been sold and sent home yet. But that's just my opinion. Especially if you have never hand fed babies before. What you're describing is the "baby quake" and he's just showing you he's happy to see you and he's still begging for food. Even though his crop may be full...They still will do the feeding response baby quake. They will even do it sometimes after they are weaned and there's nothing wrong. a lot of times its accompanied by a little raspy cry as well.

If you're still worried, as I mentioned before, take him back to the breeder and have them finish him out. Better to be safe than sorry.

every 8 hours is not enough. I don't know much about handfeeding but I do know that is not enough for the little one. Hopefully someone will come back on here and give you more info. Here is a site that gives some info on handfeeding.

I've handfed babies for friends before, and this isnt a hungry quake, its an actual shivering, and panting. It has been a few years and maybe I just forgot the reactions of the babies. Also it does not go on for too long. Also whats the temp that the baby should be at this age, i don't want him too hot. Thanks so much for your help on this all of you!!

here is some info from that site about housing and warmth.....

Housing and Heat
A small cardboard box approximately 12" x12"xl2" or a small fish aquarium with layers of paper towels over a one inch padding of cloth toweling on the bottom will serve as an incubator and holding area while the babies are young. A heating pad is placed under 1/2 of the box or aquarium. A towel is placed over the top. Either the heating pad setting or the amount of the top that is covered by the towel may be adjusted to provide a constant 85-90' for non-feathered birds. The temperature is gradually reduced as they become feathered and mature. It is recommended to observe the babies carefully to determine their comfort level. A cold baby will shiver and a baby that is too hot will not sleep well and will breathe heavily through an open mouth. A bottle or tin filled with water and holes punched in the lid to allow for evaporation will help to provide humidity.

Thanks to all for the concern and help about my lttle 5 week old baby, He's doing alot better, I think it was the way the breeder was feeding him, I went to the pet store and talked to a friend that knew alot about quakers and I told her how I saw the breeder feed him, the food was mostly water, and she just squirted it down his little throat too fast. I knew there was something wrong, and thank God I got him away from her. Anyway my friend helped me with some info too and along with all your help and hers he's doing alot better. Thanks so much!!
