Working in a pet store can be very dangerous for animal lovers like me biggrin.gif
I had been thinking about adding a fish to my zoo for a while, because I always feel very relaxed watching them swim around and I think they're cool pets. I talked to a bunch of people at work who know about fish, and found out as much as I could. Since I'm a beginner, I didn't want anything that required a lot of specialized care because I simply don't have that knowledge. I made my decision last night at work while browsing around the fish section.
Meet my new Crowntail betta, Kazuki!

His name is a combination of the Japanese words for "harmony" and "radiance". The pictures really don't do him any justice. He is so graceful and beautiful to watch, and I'm glad I "took the plunge" (excuse the pun!) and brought him home. He is my first fish, so I feel like a new mom checking on her baby every five seconds laugh.gif

Wow Oh Wow what a beauty....Never seen something like that.....I can honestly say that God's little creatures are all beautiful.......

Tell us a little more about this lovely fish....Should it be alone......Wondering if maybe they are like some other fish; they must be the only one because they would n't get along with another...(does that make sense?) tongue.gif Anyway, anything else you know about this gorgeous creature please share....

Bettas are one of my most favorite of the fish species. They are absolutely gorgeous and Kazuki is no exception!!

Male bettas (as this one is), must be kept away from other male betta, as they will fight and can kill each other. They can be kept with females though or certain other species of fish. You do have to be careful what other species you put in the tank as a lot of species will nibble on the fins of the betta and ruin them.

I have one - he is orange and so much fun to watch too. My husband named him: Fish blush.gif
They are so easy to care for. I've had big salt water tanks and to keep them clean was hard - Fish just needs fresh water once a week. rolleyes.gif

I always wanted a fish. I hear they are a lot of work

not a betta - you just need a bowl, water and food. A plant is nice too, but they don't need all those pumps etc. They are a lot cheaper to maintain too.

welcome to the beta club my friend I have a blue betta named Bubbles het gets along with Stripe my goldfish. your fish is soo pretty!! i'll post a piccyof mine when i get a chance..

BTW: Betas are easy fish to deal with as long as you feed them and change their water on occasion here's an interesting Tidbit did you know betas breathe air as well as water, thats why they dont need filters..lol

I agree, they are relatively easy to care for as long as you clean them about once a week. smile.gif They don't need a lot of room either since they come from Japan where they live in puddles. wink.gif

Congrats on your first no-legged pet! laugh.gif

Yay! Congrats on your new baby betta, woot! We have two of those, too.... Each of my kids got one for Easter earlier this year.

My son's is blue/purple, his name is Timbucktoo or something... I dunno, my son changes it everytime I turn around. He's in the shark themed house.

And my daughter's is red, his name is King (although he's in a princess themed house).

Sorry about the low quality pics... it's so hard to get good ones of the fish with this camera. I've been able to capture everything well, except the fish blush.gif

I used to have aquariums and raised bettas twice. It's not an easy task because you have to watch closely. unsure.gif

The male makes a bubble nest on top of the water to put the eggs in, while the female is in another part of the tank. They are seperated by clear glass. Then when it's time, you take out the divider and walla, he tears at her fins and bites...very abusive, the slob! mad.gif

Then he wraps his body around hers and squeezes her eggs out. Some eggs fall to the bottom and he retrieves them and spits them into the bubble nest. He keeps squeezing and retrieving until all the eggs are in the nest. You take the female out so he won't finish killing her Then when the babies hatch, he cares for them for 10 days. Then you'd better remove him or the babies become dinner.

It's a fascinating procedure but has to be done just right and in a timely fashion or all is lost. huh.gif

I used to put a mirror up to the glass to watch him flare, but don't do it too often or he'll wear himself out fighting at that "other" fish.

To get a really good picture of one, turn your flash off and put a light above the bowl.

I love the fact that you can pick some of the most beautiful glass containers for these fish to live in.

Sorry if I hit you with more info than you needed to know ohmy.gif
