Well with best of intentions we took home a couple of weeks ago a 8week possibly male Quaker (might call him "Gieger" with that scratchy electric call he makes very funny).Made an appointement with avian specialist (Dr. Backos)for full bloodwork and found out he carries Psittacosis. He got a shot last friday and in about 3hrs perked right up to full steam running up and down on the couch arm. I also am spoon feeding him mostly twice a day as he can crack some millet adn eats his Zupreem cherrios and cockatiel natural pellets. He also loves corn on the cob ,apples, some bananas, and lettuce.Everything looks good for a bird with parrot fever. My question is could this be cause of Piquet demise and if so could I carry the disease and somehow transmit it and could he get it from an old cage that I cleand with vinager and hydrogen peroxide. I read that many birds are carriers and have long lifespans considering the circumstances. The doctor said that he once had a case where he treated birds in seperate cages one with PF. one without living right next to each other. The girl at the trade show we got Gieger from had many birds from Amazons to a Lory . The only thing I was skeptical about was the fact she said the Two birds in the cage with him were the parents as they were much smaller. The Doc. said he thought Gieger was a wild caught bird as he was very green in colour more so than hand raised birds. thanx Bob

I'm just leaving work, so I don't have time to give an indepth reply...but I do see Connie eyeing this thread, so hopefully she'll help ya out.
I did want to say though that you should contact the woman where the bird came from and let them know what your vet found. Could be she wasn't aware and is putting her entire flock, as well as other birds, at risk for this disease.

Wow...I'm glad you got him to the vet quickly...Its going to be very important for you to keep his cage really clean...ALWAYS, ALWAYS, wear a mask while your cleaning the cage and make sure you ask the vet about any other precautions you should take with him as far as him being a carrier and socializing him outside the home....etc. I don't know enough about it to give you good answers...Your vet would be the best one to be asking.
