More questions from a newbie here!

Jack is on a seed diet at the moment, i've only had him 2 days and that's what he was being fed in the store, so I haven't wanted to change it straight away. What I have been doing though in encouraging him to eat lots of fruit and veggies when he's out of the cage, hopefully this will fill him up and he'd eat less seed? Would this be right?

Also, I went to the shop today and bought him some carrots, grapes, strawberries, celery and watermelon to go with his usual broccoli and lettuce. Are any of these things bad for him? Should he be getting any in moderation? Is there anything else I should think about getting for him?

I'm so sorry to be a bother, I just want little Jack to be healthy and happy here in his new home smile.gif

I would not bother with the lettuce replace it with a silverbeet/spinach leaf or two, much more in those..
see if he will take to munching on pellets and if so then you could disgard the seeds except for treats ..
I reccommend Roudybush crumbles maintainance pellets they are small like seeds and my fids love them..but there are other good brands too, Harrisons,Haegan life time granuals are two others I have heared recommended , I am sure other members will be along to offer advice too..
I give my guys a warm cooked meal of a night boiled brown rice with some veggies, I make a big lot and freeze in small daily portions..they also get wholemeal pasta sometimes , mashed sweet potato is another favorite and occasionally some scrambled egg..plenty of healthy foods to offer and if your guy is like mine if you are eating it for sure her will want some...multi grain bread or toast is also a fav. when we are having breakfast and a spoon full of my porridge goes down well, they love to share Mums breakie..
Good luck and don`t be afraid to ask someone here will always advise you if you are unsure..
My vet told me to give fruit only a couple of times a week as the natural sugar will sometimes cause a yeast problem if they have too much it can also cause watery poops..
Good luck ..
Chat later time for me to go get some groceries you have a good evening..

You're not a bother! That's what we're here for.

you can find a list of healthy foods listed at the top of the diet forum, it's really useful.

If you check hereyou'll find a lot of articles on parrot diet. The fruit and veggies you bought are fine, with fruit limit it to a couple times a week because of the high sugars. Also, with grapes try and avoid ones from Chili as they have high pesticide use and sometimes can carry a mold on the skin that's bad.

Ideally you would want to switch your baby to a pellet diet, at the top of the diet forum, there is a conversion method by Andie Wan Kenobi that works very well. Seeds really have no nutritional value and also are just like candy so the more they get, the more they want

Don't worry about too many questions! wink.gif

You don't want to make any major switches in the beginning since he is still getting used to everything... but eventually you'll want to switch him over to a pelleted diet, which is healthier for them. Quakers are prone to Fatty Liver Disease, and seeds are much higher in fat and should be fed in moderation as treats, not a main diet. smile.gif
Below you'll find Andies Conversion, but again, you'll want to wait a little while before trying it. smile.gif

All those foods are fine. Grapes you might want to use in moderation since they are very high in sugar. smile.gif Also, you want more vegetables, again because of the amount of sugar. Some Quaker favourites are: sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, melons, corn, strawberries, pastas, rice, broccoli, papaya, chicken, egg, etc. I know that most aren't a fan of Carrots! Casey will only eat them once in a while streamed in little tiny chunks that fit in her beak! biggrin.gif

To find out what foods they like and dislike you have to just keep offering as they might not like it one day and a week later they have changed their mind! biggrin.gif Some prefer them served in different ways, ie. match-stick form so they can hold it, or little chunks that they don't have to touch or mashed or different shapes... you just have to figure out what they like best. smile.gif Basically anything we can eat they will want to taste! Just don't let Jack have avacado, it's poisonous!
