i would like to build an aviary, 8x4x6

any ideas, warnings. etc.?

there are lots of plans on the web for building them. Make sure you use untreated pine, stainless steel mesh and that everything is absolutly bird safe.

Can't wait to see pics!

I dont know anything about building an avery but *bumping* this up maybe some other people will know about these things. Good luck that sounds like a brilliant idea!

My main concern right now is keeping other animals out- like mice and such. I plan on making the floor out of concrete rocks- like the ones that decorate the garden. I need to dig about 6 inches into the ground but I just cannot picture it. I am still working out the details. I am taking it slow so that it comes out really well for the birds.

use a galvanized, welded-wire cloth for the walls and roof.====This is what I read on one of the sites- I am getting different information as far as this- can someone clear it up for me?-- Joanne--- would this be the opposite of stainless steel mesh?
Joanne's Animal Kingdom
galvinized is a major no-no it is zinc plated and can give your bird metal poisoning.

Stainless steel is the best - but pricey - I did see something about a new powder coated mesh but I haven't seen it in retail anywhere yet.

as for the base - make sure you put down weed block fabric before you put the rocks down - you may also want to put fine mesh chicken wire that will keep rodents out- you put it down then rocks on top and you staple the mesh to your frame base.

You solved my problem as far as the base---I had been cracking my head over this----you saved me some trouble....I would love any more ideas.
I read that I need to make the roof from corrugated colorband roofing?--- and put some wood on the base of the roof to provide cover from the rain or wind- since the birds go up high when it does rain or anything such as high wind?
Please tell me if this sounds good.

I plan on having them outside year round-- winter does not freeze here,, it goes down to 50 maybe, if it happens to get colder I plan on bringing them inside. I want to put in couple of nest boxed for them to shield themsleves from the cold in any case.....I could buy heat rocks for them as well. THanks.

Update- we have the base down. We put down 1/2 inch chicken wire at the bottom- we are going to put cement rocks for the floor with space in between for the seeds that fall to the floor to grow. I already found the screen to go inside- It is galvanized but it is covered in vinyl- I want to call it, it is green, 1/2 inch spaces. THen I am putting a thin black screen for the mosquitoes- then a 1/2 inch chicken wire on the outside for the rodents and pests. The roof---- I can't decide- suggestions are more than welcome. I was thinking on putting a tarp for the ceiling and letting it come down 6 inches for shade and protection from wind - rain ,etc....... but not sure- again--- ideas are wanted. Thanks..... excl.gif

I forgot to add- it turned out to be 7x8 and I will devide it in 1/2---l for the budgies and finches--1/2 for Coci and the B>G's
