Just a thought. What can we make out of our kids old blue Jeans? Any ideas? I would love to hear them.

I would think the only thing that would not be safe would be the raveling that demin material does. But, with this in mind, I would think that the material could be cut in strips wide enough to either hem or sew then turn inside out so that the ravels would be inside. Then depending on the length you could hold in the middle and find a way to hang this or even braid some strands. Sew buttons ,balls beads ,bells anything your bird likes to play with. Fasten a foraging toy. Just be careful of the raveling. I dont think the material itself would be harmful.Maybe be a toy for outside of cage so that he only plays with it when you are around. Maybe just a wide piece that is hemmed or turned inside out and hang on side of cage with this sewn on and hang flat. May be harder to climb this way cause demin is slick when flat.

I use pieces of denim all of the time for Mongo - I have made him pillows, I sew large coconut buttons on for him to tear off, he has a "friend" made from denim too. It is one of the few fabrics that can hold up to his destruction. Keep in mind he is a U2 so you can use qp safe buttons and smaller things than what I have to use.

Keep in mind as Kate mentioned...that with the way Denim ravels that you need to keep the fibers cut short...So cut things on the bias so that the threads as they unravel are short that way the fibers stay short so they're less likely to cause a problem with strangulation or with getting toes or legs cut off from them wrapping around. You might also want to be careful with the blended fabric denim...as those fibers are partially synthetic and won't break as easily and they won't digest the way cotton does.

when donia was about 2, she had the cutest pair of guess cutoffs. they had a built in raveled edge, but just above the ravel, it was sewn so that it would not ravel further - sort of like a perma-ravel. would this be an option? the raveled edge could be set up short enough to not cause harm, but could act as a preening toy. just a thought.

I actually made a happy hut with some old jeans Jacob adored it then one morning after a evening of chewing he managed to get his feet tangled up well I go thim undone no damage done but I will not use denim for any of my birds which is a sad thing because I still have not found a cuddle hut that jacob will use maybe once I learn to sew a straight line on my machine (if you saw my attempts you would swear I was drunk) I will make him another hut that is safer.
