I haven't gotten my baby Q yet, but one day hope to. In the meantime I have taken in a adult Redhead Amazon - Max. He was part of a mating pair. I have never taken in such a large, adult bird. I am hoping that we can become bestest buddies, but know that whatever happens, he will always have a home with me. I will try to attach his pic to this, but haven't had any luck doing so for my profile. I did make a album and his photo is there if it doesn't work in here.
I will keep looking for a Baby Q, but until that happens, Max and I will keep our fingers/toes crossed.
I hope to keep posting on our progress in getting to know each other. I am already learning what he likes to eat and what he doesn't like....... hehe
thanks for reading .......ttfn,

Hi Tina

Congrats on acquiring Max...How long was he a breeder? I hope the person you got him from talked with you about what to watch for as far as aggression signs...fanning tail pinning eyes lowering head and extending the wings slightly in a hunkered pose...

Do you know if he was a pet prior to being a breeder? How old is he...

Amazons are amazing birds but they are fast and can carry a very severe bite. Do NOT allow him on your shoulder...Keep him below eye level and away from your face.

Have you heard or read about what we call the "honeymoon period"?
Thats where the bird will be just as sweet as can be for some time and then bang...he can turn evil and give some really severe bites. The honeymoon period is different length for every bird...some birds it might last a week, some a month or two and some just are mean from the beginning just to see what they can get away with.

I'm hoping Max turns out to be a sweetheart...But I just want you to be forewarned about it.

Don't be tentative around him...if you ask him to do something follow through even if he complains...and they are good at giving a growling complaint.

You may have read in another recent thread that its not a matter IF he's going to bite, its WHEN he's going to bite...And if he bites, make sure you push into the bite, it serves two purposes...1 it throws them off balance and the let go and 2. it doesn't hurt as much when you push into it as it does jerking away.

Welcome to the forum...I'd say you have your work cut out for you...But its very possible...but its going to take a LOT of patience....

Anyway...welcome to the forum...you're going to love living here! wink.gif

Thanks Andies Mom,

I had a senegal that must have done the honeymoon thing. We got a long good, andthen one day it attacked me, and never stopped. lol
But I intend to give Max all the time he needs and if he decides he isn't gonna make that certain connection, thats OK too, I will always take care of him, no matter what.
I am not sure how long he and his lady MaryJane were bred and if they ever actually were, My friend got them about 3 years ago. (She isn't really a bird gal, just a truly generous animal rescuer.) She had to separate them as he would beat up on her. So they have been in separate cagees as long as she has had them. I don't have alot of real info about them aside that. ONe thing is that she said no matter how shew tried, neither bird was interested in toys. So they have not had any in thier cages for a while. I put one of those perches in for his nails. I have a treat toy to put in in a coule days, don't want to freak him out too soon. I have had him in my hand once, at her home before I took him home. I haven't tried to do that yet. Its only been a day so I thought I would just let him be for a bit.
Keep your fingers crossed that we can become buds, but I know thereis no guarantee......
thankd so much for the info! I can use all the help I can get!
ttfn,
Tina and Max
