I have one idea how to fix the 'gap' problem at bottom of cage because of missing grate above tray. I am going to use the 'shelf' that is supposed to be on bottom of cage..It seems to fit nicely there....and I can attach it below..where there bird can't get at with clips, or the like... Only thing is that the bar spacing is too big..squares, bird can't walk on that! So I am thinking, would a sheet of cardboard box work? Or too temporary an idea. Need something to cover the grate...though I guess bottom tray is now useless! blink.gif

That's a good idea. Have to find a place where I can get custom cut plastic.

Or I just bought some vinyl runner for below the cage..I wonder if that would work also? Brainstorming is great!

OK...I'm confused...what are you trying to accomplish? Start from the beginning, I'm a little slow today I guess.....

Sorry! I got a cage the other day, but its' missing the metal grate that goes above the tray on the bottom. Because of that, there is a narrow opening in the bottom of the cage. I am trying to improvise a grate to put over the tray to keep the bird from going onto the tray and also from being able to get out through the gap. You can see the gap in the photo. I am using the 'shelf' that you are supposed to put on bottom of cage on legs as it seems to fit correctly (same dimensions). But it has big squares so it is not safe just using that instead of a proper grate.. am trying to figure how to cover the squares.

You can see how big those 'squares' are in the pics above.

Sorry! I know I'm a bit confusing. blink.gif

OH, OK now I get it... I was really cornfused! wink.gif

I have a couple of those too and what I did was went to the store and found one of those acrylic photo frames thats like a flat box that has the card board back took the card board back out of it and stuck it in there. It might fit perfectly but it fills the space enough to keep the bird from getting out AND it also serves the purpose of catching the poop...

Or depending on how much money you want to spend you can call around to some metal shops and see if you can get someone to fabricate a bottom pan to the exact size and then have it powder coated.

ORRRRR....you can ask around here and see if someone has an old cage the same size that has a good tray and see if you can get it from them....

How big is the cage what are the deminsions, I might have one laying around that's not in use...and if you pay the postage/shipping I'd send it to you just to get it out of here...If I have one that fits of course

I'd nix the runner/vinyl idea. Cockatiels are BIG chewers and I'm betting that stuff is toxic to them.

I like the idea of something that can't be chewed on.

It's 20x20x30. So I guess I need a metal grate sized 20x20....

Here's hoping!!

Yeh, I agree Carrie-Anne, re: vinyl....that was a quick thought, and not a very good one. LOL

So are you wanting the grate or the drop pan?
Carolynandherbirds
Grate.

I'll check in the next day or two what I have...do you care what color?
NCVon
How about going to a hardware store and purchasing some screen material (like for screen doors). Strong enought to be stiff not pliable. Cut it to fit inside, be sure its stainless steel.
Carolynandherbirds
Andie's Mom, nope, don't care what the colour is. Crossing my fingers. Please please....or anyone out there who has extra bird cage parts lying around

Nvcon, great idea..I wonder if you can find it made with SS though. Worth a check though.

Thanks for all your help. I think that the cage is still alright despite missing that one part, and that with some help or improvisation, that I will be able to use it in the new year. It's in great shape otherwise....it's all there, except for that grate...

Hi. Don't know if this could work, but what about using a large cookie cooling rack (or two smailer ones)over the top of the existing large square-holed grate? I just measured my small baking rack, and it's 10 x 14. I know that there are larger "commercial" sizes available. Perhaps you could find one for cheap at a Wal-Mart type store?
Carolynandherbirds
I just checked Petcetera, where the cage originally was purchased, and nope, they don't have any spare cage parts lying around and you can't even buy parts of the cage. Darn it!

I "fixed" one by using large, flat, "oven liner" aluminum cookie sheets in the disposable department of Walmart, but I was replacing the pull out tray. Then I heavily lined it with newspaper to keep them from the tray, but mine was under the grate.

What about the plastic covered, mesh wire closet shelves, like at Lowe's or Home Depot. You might even sweet talk someone into cutting it? And those stores have plexiglass by the sheet, 1/4 sheet, and 1/2 sheet that they will cut to fit also.

Good luck.
