If I'm not asleep, I'm listening to music! Life without iTunes/iPod just doesn't bear thinking about. Not everyone is as dedicated/sad as me, but let us know what you are/have been listening to.

Volte-Face by Riverside

I LOVE my iPod. I got the 80gig and want the 160. I have all my favorite audio books and most of my music as well. I'm a weirdo though. I like the "new age" stuff like Cusco, Coyote Oldman, David Arkenstone, Medwynn Goodall and the like. But my workout music ranges from Black Sabbath to Powerman5000, Type O Negtive,(Love the October Rust CD) and Nickelback. I don't listen to the radio at all so what I get is usually through trial and error. I'm eclectic though. I have bluegrass to contemporary jazz as well. Like I said... I'm a weirdo. :rolleyes:The best part is that I finally have a stereo with real speakers to play it all one. Prior to that it's just been an iHome iPod player. Now I have a real stereo that will interface with my iPod. Talk about heaven. Not sure what the birds think about the super bass or the sub woofer, but the canary really liked Beethoven tonight nice and loud. Seems to favor Moonlight Sonata to sing to. laugh.gif

I like country (from back when it was actually country), rock and roll (the original type of music that was named rock and roll), blues, jazz, dixieland, old time swing and sometimes I get in the mood for some opera and/or classical.
KraftyMommas
I listen to almost anything. But I tend to gravitate to newer alternative sounds.
I love the All American Rejects. Good "boy band". LOL
CaptainQuark
Well I'll try not to hold the country against you, Buddy. We Old Farts should stick together! biggrin.gif

Dance with the Shadow by Riverside (that's Riverside the Polish prog metal band, not Riverside the country band)

Can we have 3? I like Romantic Music, "Easy Listening" and Light Classical. Being a hopeless romanti, Romantic music comes first! wub.gif Don't be sad! mellow.gif

Back at the time and place where I grew up, if you didn't like country music, they would be friendly with you or give you a ride to town but they wouldn't invite you over for chicken dinner. biggrin.gif
Dee
Although I will listen to almost anything except old country .. my iPod is pretty much loaded with music from the 80s .. Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Boston, Chicago, Meat Loaf, Elton, April Wine, Nazareth, Northern Pikes, Whitesnake etc etc etc

Right now I am listening to "Just Between You and Me" --> April Wine ...

I have my different moods for music, when I'm angry it's nine inch nails, rob zombie, marilyn manson, afi, linkin park, when i'm upbeat nickelback, 3 doors down, some old school hip hop like run dmc, de la soul, finger eleven, buckcherry, when i'm sad it's all romance, give me some celine, bryan adams, and when i want to go back to the past it's ozzy, metallica, megadeath, poison.........
Carrie~Anne
I'm an open book...I can appreciate any type of music. I don't listen to the new country though. Older country isn't too bad (I loooooove Johnny Horton!! laugh.gif ). I'm definitely an 80's girl though and throw some 70's in there for good measure wink.gif

One of my favorite groups is Hootie and the Blowfish. They have some great songs and Darius Rucker's voice is to die for. whew! blush.gif

Call me sad, but I had to come into the studio today to get at my Mac, so I thought, while I'm here and have access to the full internet rather than just the tiny fragment I can get to from a WAP phone, I'd elaborate a little on the kind of music I listen to the most.

When most people think of Heavy Metal, images of Ozzy Osbourne spring to mind, with all kinds of satanic overtones, beheadings on stage and other cr@p like that. Well yes, that does happen, but it's limited to the sort of stuff that appeals to spotty 14-year-old rebellious teenage boys. The sad fact is that I am no longer 14 years old, so I have moved on somewhat...

...to Progressive Metal. While the sound can be just as heavy as any other genre of metal, the theme is all about examining the human condition, humankind's relationship with life, the planet, God and many other important issues, including romantic love and heartbreak

The band I was listening to last night, Riverside, is a perfect example of this softer kind of metal. Don't believe me? Try listening to this track, In Two Minds, which is a legal download from their website. Not as bad as you thought it would be, was it? Well how about something a little heavier? Loosing Heart, another free, legal download from the website, is the Riverside track that first got my attention.

That'll do for a start...

And you thought it was all just headbanging! laugh.gif

Right now I am listening to some tango music...Blue Tango moves my spirit and soul (and not often enough, my feet)! I often listen to dance music... stems from the fact that for several years I trained dance instructors for Arthur Murray Studios...then a year for Fred Astaire. Didn't like Fred's place as well.
CaptainQuark
Feeling in a Morningside kinda mood today.

The Morningside is a Russian prog doom band whose debut album evokes strong images of autumnal Russian forest.

Heavy, yet sweetly melodic.

Hmmm, that would describe older coutry music lyrics to a tee.

Right now, I'm listening to Sara, Maybelle and A.P. - Anybody know who that is?

Yeah, but all those nasally-whining cowboys...

I'd say, if you don't like it, you probably shouldn't listen to it.

I've never detected the nasal sounds that I've heard so much about.

You won't hear banjos in mainstream country music (old or new). They're more a bluegrass instrument (which I love also).

To each his own.
Dark Angel
I am just listening to my birds tonight kind of jet lagged but nothing compares to the hot sexy mariachi guys who serenaded me last night in their attempt to make me happy tried to play some metallica that def put a smile on my face lol.

I cannot believe no one has said ANYTHING ELVIS, The old man Hank Williams and Dwight Yoakum. But some of the really good stuff also came from ones like Buddy Holly and La Bamba. Soooo many great old artists out there that werent all country. John Denver and credance Clearwater Revival, Patsy Cline. I know its a wide variety but I like what I like.Too many to mention.
QTQP4me
literally, currently i am listening to some gameboy game that the kid is playing on the cube.

as far as what i like to listen to, i can go from rap to r&b to hip hop to country (modern era, but not always current chart toppers) to top 40. i have one song i absolutely LOVE, boriqua anthem, which i am told is merengue (not like pie, like latin music - not sure if i spelled it right lol). love that genre smile.gif reggaeton is up there too. makes no difference to me if i understand what i am singing, or if i am actually saying words properly. most times i will hum along and then belt out the one word i know - da da da da da CULO! da da da da etc. smile.gif

i also am partial to the "hair" bands of the mid-late 80s - motley crue being my fave of them. and, while not a "hair" band, i love me some metallica. i can't forget them. i like some old metal type stuff too, like ozzy, some black sabbath, judas priest.

when i am listening with ian, i am exposed to classical music, latin jazz, regular jazz, OLD country (original hank williams).

basically i like anything that is fun to sing along with (or belt out, like most celine dion songs) and gets me bopping around. i tend to get very dramatic when i sing and chair dance. smile.gif and i don't much care if people think i am a lunatic for going from ludacris to johnny cash to judas priest (as my coworkers think of me) lol.

Music... always been a much discussed/argued about topic in the family. For me, music is everything. I'd be dead without it. My tastes are rather more eclectic than CQ's. I really really HATE the idea of genres, just not keen on putting labels on things because I find it breeds elitism and intolerance. Having said that, I listen to a lot of the same stuff said geezer does. Discover lots of bands on his advice, like Opeth, Tool, The Morningside, Pain of Salvation, Riverside, Indukti and the list goes on. Also love lots of Death metal like my hometown heroes and all-time favourite band Dark Tranquillity. Keen on other metal too, like Iron Maiden. Okay, I love metal. Always will, and am always open to discovering new stuff.

When it comes to non-metal, my tastes are practically limitless. This doesn't mean I'm easy to please, 'cos I ain't, but I firmly believe that every style of music has something good that will appeal to me. Likewise, every style and genre has some utter crap. I keep an open mind though. I'll listen to anything that isn't morally objectionable or overly commercial mass-produced tripe at least once to form an opinion.

I don't like everything I hear, because music is subjective. Because music is subjective, genres don't work. No two people will experience music with any kind of depth in exactly the same way.

I'm not going to type out a list of bands, because it would take too long and you probably don't care anyway. If you do care, you can check out my profile on last.fm for a glimpse at what I've listened to the most in recent years. tongue.gif
CaptainQuark
Aaah - the ol' genre debate...

I am a prodigious user of music and am constantly on the lookout for more. Even Xlator admits that there's lots of dross out there, but by searching for "prog" and "metal", there's a good chance that I'll like the result!

CaptainQuark
Perhaps the one most important aspect of prog metal for me is something that many people don't even notice: the drumming!

No metronomic 'dunk dunk dunk' for me. Once you've listened to Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, there's no turning back!

Janet, if you look up the page a bit, you'll see that I've posted links to a couple of Riverside tracks. Try them - they're not even a little bit scary!
equineRtist
There is some country music I will tolerate and one or two I like but there is a difference in country and "HILLBILLY". Hillbilly is the old type country of Hank Williams (now there's a nasal problem if I ever heard one), June Carter Cash and that silly little rooster Bob Wills, who strutted around the stage with his butt and belly poked out yelling "Yeeeehawwww" while the rest of the group sang. I never knew WHY anyone would do that. I only saw it once or twice when someone else was watching it. That was enough for me.
I do like George Strait (a little more sophisticated country than most), but have never gone so far as to buy any of his music.
I loved Floyed Cramer's piano and Chet Adkins' guitar, but their choice of music was classy!
I love the Statler brothers and the Oak Ridge Boys, but I still cannot stand the old mountain music, Bluegrass. Now THAT'S whining! I love a violin, but when it's played "fiddle style" NO NO NO!
Hubby likes country. I just can't help it. It's just not me. Mind you I am not apologizing. I just love my romantics and light classicals! To me, each kind of music has class...each class is on a different level.
smile.gif Like QP said "to each his own" wink.gif
Oh and I like the 50s music. I was there, so that was my era and it brings back great thoughts.
