If I'm not asleep, I'm listening to music! Life without iTunes/iPod just doesn't bear thinking about. Not everyone is as dedicated/sad as me, but let us know what you are/have been listening to.

I LOVE my iPod. I got the 80gig and want the 160. I have all my favorite audio books and most of my music as well. I'm a weirdo though. I like the "new age" stuff like Cusco, Coyote Oldman, David Arkenstone, Medwynn Goodall and the like. But my workout music ranges from Black Sabbath to Powerman5000, Type O Negtive,(Love the October Rust CD) and Nickelback. I don't listen to the radio at all so what I get is usually through trial and error. I'm eclectic though. I have bluegrass to contemporary jazz as well. Like I said... I'm a weirdo. :rolleyes:The best part is that I finally have a stereo with real speakers to play it all one. Prior to that it's just been an iHome iPod player. Now I have a real stereo that will interface with my iPod. Talk about heaven. Not sure what the birds think about the super bass or the sub woofer, but the canary really liked Beethoven tonight nice and loud. Seems to favor Moonlight Sonata to sing to.

I have my different moods for music, when I'm angry it's nine inch nails, rob zombie, marilyn manson, afi, linkin park, when i'm upbeat nickelback, 3 doors down, some old school hip hop like run dmc, de la soul, finger eleven, buckcherry, when i'm sad it's all romance, give me some celine, bryan adams, and when i want to go back to the past it's ozzy, metallica, megadeath, poison.........

I'm an open book...I can appreciate any type of music. I don't listen to the new country though. Older country isn't too bad (I loooooove Johnny Horton!!

). I'm definitely an 80's girl though and throw some 70's in there for good measure

Call me sad, but I had to come into the studio today to get at my Mac, so I thought, while I'm here and have access to the full internet rather than just the tiny fragment I can get to from a WAP phone, I'd elaborate a little on the kind of music I listen to the most.
When most people think of
Heavy Metal, images of Ozzy Osbourne spring to mind, with all kinds of satanic overtones, beheadings on stage and other cr@p like that. Well yes, that does happen, but it's limited to the sort of stuff that appeals to spotty 14-year-old rebellious teenage boys. The sad fact is that I am no longer 14 years old, so I have moved on somewhat...
...to
Progressive Metal. While the sound can be just as heavy as any other genre of metal, the theme is all about examining the human condition, humankind's relationship with life, the planet, God and many other important issues, including romantic love and heartbreak
The band I was listening to last night,
Riverside, is a perfect example of this softer kind of metal. Don't believe me? Try listening to this track,
In Two Minds, which is a legal download from their website. Not as bad as you thought it would be, was it? Well how about something a
little heavier?
Loosing Heart, another free, legal download from the website, is the Riverside track that first got my attention.
That'll do for a start...
And you thought it was all just headbanging!

Right now I am listening to some tango music...Blue Tango moves my spirit and soul (and not often enough, my feet)! I've never detected the nasal sounds that I've heard so much about.
You won't hear banjos in mainstream country music (old or new). They're more a bluegrass instrument (which I love also).

literally, currently i am listening to some gameboy game that the kid is playing on the cube.
as far as what i like to listen to, i can go from rap to r&b to hip hop to country (modern era, but not always current chart toppers) to top 40. i have one song i absolutely LOVE, boriqua anthem, which i am told is merengue (not like pie, like latin music - not sure if i spelled it right lol). love that genre

reggaeton is up there too. makes no difference to me if i understand what i am singing, or if i am actually saying words properly. most times i will hum along and then belt out the one word i know - da da da da da CULO! da da da da etc.

i also am partial to the "hair" bands of the mid-late 80s - motley crue being my fave of them. and, while not a "hair" band, i love me some metallica. i can't forget them. i like some old metal type stuff too, like ozzy, some black sabbath, judas priest.
when i am listening with ian, i am exposed to classical music, latin jazz, regular jazz, OLD country (original hank williams).
basically i like anything that is fun to sing along with (or belt out, like most celine dion songs) and gets me bopping around. i tend to get very dramatic when i sing and chair dance.

and i don't much care if people think i am a lunatic for going from ludacris to johnny cash to judas priest (as my coworkers think of me) lol.

Music... always been a much discussed/argued about topic in the family. For me, music is everything. I'd be dead without it. My tastes are rather more eclectic than CQ's. I really really HATE the idea of genres, just not keen on putting labels on things because I find it breeds elitism and intolerance. Having said that, I listen to a lot of the same stuff said geezer does. Discover lots of bands on his advice, like
Opeth,
Tool,
The Morningside,
Pain of Salvation,
Riverside,
Indukti and the list goes on. Also love lots of Death metal like my hometown heroes and all-time favourite band
Dark Tranquillity. Keen on other metal too, like
Iron Maiden. Okay, I love metal. Always will, and am always open to discovering new stuff.
When it comes to non-metal, my tastes are practically limitless. This doesn't mean I'm easy to please, 'cos I ain't, but I firmly believe that every style of music has something good that will appeal to me. Likewise, every style and genre has some utter crap. I keep an open mind though. I'll listen to anything that isn't morally objectionable or overly commercial mass-produced tripe at least once to form an opinion.
I don't like everything I hear, because music is subjective. Because music is subjective, genres don't work. No two people will experience music with any kind of depth in exactly the same way.
I'm not going to type out a list of bands, because it would take too long and you probably don't care anyway. If you do care, you can check out my profile on
last.fm for a glimpse at what I've listened to the most in recent years.

Aaah - the ol' genre debate...
I am a prodigious user of music and am constantly on the lookout for more. Even Xlator admits that there's lots of dross out there, but by searching for "prog" and "metal", there's a good chance that I'll like the result!

Perhaps the one most important aspect of prog metal for me is something that many people don't even notice: the drumming!

There is some country music I will tolerate and one or two I like but there is a difference in country and "HILLBILLY". Hillbilly is the old type country of Hank Williams (now there's a nasal problem if I ever heard one), June Carter Cash and that silly little rooster Bob Wills, who strutted around the stage with his butt and belly poked out yelling "Yeeeehawwww" while the rest of the group sang. I never knew WHY anyone would do that. I only saw it once or twice when someone else was watching it. That was enough for me.
I do like George Strait (a little more sophisticated country than most), but have never gone so far as to buy any of his music.
I loved Floyed Cramer's piano and Chet Adkins' guitar, but their choice of music was classy!
I love the Statler brothers and the Oak Ridge Boys, but I still cannot stand the old mountain music, Bluegrass. Now THAT'S whining! I love a violin, but when it's played "fiddle style" NO NO NO!
Hubby likes country. I just can't help it. It's just not me. Mind you I am not apologizing. I just love my romantics and light classicals! To me, each kind of music has class...each class is on a different level.

Like QP said "to each his own"
Oh and I like the 50s music. I was there, so that was my era and it brings back great thoughts.
