wub.gif Before I get into the explanation, first I would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to KathyC for bringing Dwight and I together! wub.gif

Here he is!

Dwight is 16 years old and has had at least three owners that we are aware of. Dwight was kept in his cage at a vet's office for two years before they decided he was vicious and were going to put him down. The woman I picked him up from yesterday took him in and has been working to rehabilitate him for the past five years.

Dwight has an issue with being overweight, and he also has gout. He is on meds for the gout, and I believe that with a change in diet and more exercise we may be able to get him into better shape. Dwight was also a plucker, and has a spot on his neck where his feathers have never grown back.

He is a very sweet boy and I am positive he will be feeling right at home with us in no time. Be warned ... many more photos coming soon!! Wish us luck! biggrin.gif wink.gif

A BFA was once the love of my life. I lost her in my house fire in 1987. Needless to say I was crushed beyond belief! She was soooo sweet! wub.gif

Hi Connie! I have not owned Amazons before, though I do work with them fairly extensively at the sanctuary. I feel comfortable in handling them. He is a he! We have his DNA certificate! Great point about the day light limits ... we have to do that with Laika too, so I don't expect any difficulties.

You know I will be PMing you right off if there are! smile.gif

BFAs are wonderful. I rescued a pair of young males about 8 yrs ago and after some worked re-homed the more well adjusted of the two and kept the other. He was a wonderful bird who was my constant companion for yrs. He was a junk food junkie who loved to walk in the park and ride in the car and semi truck with me. He died in a tragic accident 2 yrs ago, and I still miss him very much. At Dwight's age most of the inherent problems with male BFAs should be manageable.

Super! Hes soooo beautiful, I cant wait until we get our blue front smile.gif

Update as promised!

As some of you know, when Dwight arrived with us he had pressure sores and blisters on the bottom of his feet. In order to treat this, we have added many flat perches from birdontherocks.com, as well as very wide wooden perches for Dwight to climb around on. To address his weight issue, we have been trying to get him to be more active. One sure way to do this was to move the food dish.

The food dish is now at the bottom of the steps, and the water is at the top, so he has to go up and down when he eats -- forcing him to move. Dwight has also been converted to a diet of LowFat Roudybush and Parrot Island Mix. No more peanuts or safflower seeds. It hasn't been easy ... but at long last the progress can be seen!

Now that he is sleeping on the flat perches, his blisters and pressure sores have healed, and he can even see his own feet!! Dwight is now able to grasp food in his foot and bring it all the way to his mouth! LOL, you may laugh -- but this is truly a HUGE accomplishment for an overweight, undermotivated 16 year old Amazon.

Here is a pic of his newest accomplishment ... note the feather tone, and the balance! He also has a wonderful sparkle in his eyes now!! wub.gif
