Full Version: Can You Add Something Like This?

In the last couple days I've realized how many people are from NC. I don't always run into their posts so I didn't know how many.

Can we try adding something like this for all of the states...

http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ub...Board/18/page/1
It would, of course, be voluntary and not something that members have to do.

By doing this on that site, hundreds of us have become friends and have a lot of get togethers. Every July we have one with a couple hundred people and we stay at a hotel for 3-5 days.

I like the idea!

We have the option of putting where we live in our Avitar area I like it when people do its always fun to see where people are from.
Paula0442
I noticed them in the avatars but it would be easier if we could put them in stae sections. I just love looking at the one on the site I showed you. wub.gif
Dee
How do we deal with the people who don't live in the US? By country?

Are you suggesting one forum called roll call then setting up one thread per area?
Stendeck's Mum
I think its a great idea especially for those of us from other countrys, I am always searching for quaker owners in the UK out of interest and lets face it England is only as big as one of your states so we would be pretty bunched up over here lol

Dee

This is what we do on another group, in a data base and you just put in your info if you want to.

Laid across like a table or excel spreadsheet. I agree it would be great if we could do this.
Members could just fill in the parts they were comfortable with. One has a Frapper map so you can put a pin in your location.

Can we do it? Pleeze! Pleeze! Pleeeeeeeeeeze!!!!! blush.gif

Another great idea to add to this would be if you're available to offer parrot sitting services.
QPdad
This forum is a software application. If that is not included in the package from Invision, it could be pretty expensive to have the additional programs written to implement it.

We already have a thread for this Paying It Forward ... don't know how many people actually LOOK thru it tho to find out if someone can help out ... but it's there ...
NCVon
I remember that one, but we were thinking of was like the member page. Dee or Shelly can the member page be set so one of the choices to sort is by state or country?
Dee
With a little workm I think I can do what Paula has posted (linked to) .. but will have to check with Shelly to see if she is ok with it.

We could set up a forum called "Roll Call" or whatever else we want to call it. Within that forum I could start one thread for every State, Province, Country etc .. depending on how we choose to divided regionally .. Only Shelly and I will be able to start a thread so we don't have multiple regions but all members can post within individual threads ..

Members can post within their region should they choose to do so .. keeping in mind that you can't post personal information of others and we discourage posting personal information of your own as well..

I can also force a sort by title in alpha order .. keeping in mind that this type of sort means when someone posts in a thread it won't come to the top as the sort will remain alphabetical ..

Is this what you were thinking of?

The country field is a custom field that I created therefore it can't be used in a sort option from the member listing ..

That sounds cool to me!

Can you add another custom field for State that can be used for sorting Dee? If not the other idea is great too!

I could add a custom field for State/Province etc .. but because it was a custom field you wouldn't be able to sort on it .. sad.gif I could query at the database level but the only sorts available are built in ..

Shelly hasn't had a chance to look or think this through yet but will let you know what she thinks ..

Darn! Oh well....really appreciate you and Shelly taking the time to do this for us too! Thank you! wub.gif

Is there any way you could just change the field name in the visible HTML (only) and sort by (order by) what's available?
For example: <b>State</b> <input type="text" name="age"> <br /> - - Assuming that "age" is available but "state" isn't.

I don't know. Just asking. smile.gif
Dee
Ok ...

I have added the Country custom field to the search functionality but haven't tested it .. If you go to "Members" then click on Toggle Options .. The custom field is at the bottom ... You can type in the country you are looking for and only those members who have completed that field and exactly match your query will be displayed.

Keep in mind that it is case sensitive .. For instance if the member inputs Canada and you search canada .. Then you won't get that member in your results ... Not clean but it does work ..

What may be a better approach is a Country drop down choice versus user input. The only problem is that the existing custom country field would go away .. and existing members will need to go to their profiles to choose their country. New members would have the option on registration.

I could add State/Province etc to a custom field but I think Paula's request is more to be able to communicate with members in the same area versus just sort on them .. Is that right?

Thanks

OOps...after re-reading her first thread I think your right and she is looking more for the Roll Call.
Paula0442
Yes, that's one I thought would be great. On the board that I first posted about
http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ub...Board/18/page/1
is utilized soooo often by everyone. That's how a lot of us have become good friends and plan state by state get togethers.
The only problem is that there gets to be too much chit chat, which I'm also guilty of. blush.gif
Dee
Ok .. I will need some help getting this going ... This is what I am thinking ..

  • I will setup the forum and call it Roll Call (Unless someone can come up with another name .. suggestions?)
  • In order to ensure that there is only one thread per state or region .. only the QP.com staff will be able to start a thread but eveyrone can post to them.
  • I will start a seperate thread in this section and ask everyone to post the name of the state they want to have a thread for and eventually we will get them all ..
  • Any suggestions for other countries? Do we want one thread for Canada etc .. Thoughts?
Thanks
NCVon
Sounds perfect! Don't forget UK and Australia.Thank you so much for doing this!!
Dee
Could I ask someone to post all the states in one post for me .. Sorry not great with Geography and don't want to miss any ..

For members in other countries .. Can you list your country in a post here and I will add them as they are listed. Also let me know if you think your country should be split into regions ..

Like Canada --> Should we have Pacific, Prairie, Eastern and Atlantic etc ..?

Thanks
QPdad

I don't know what you have to do but I have the HTML for the whole form field if that would help.
Dee
Roll Call is now available .. This is a work in progress so please continue to post feedback in this section and not in the Roll Call forum ..

I have a couple of questions ..
  • Do we include States where quakers are illegal
  • The first post in every thread is blank -- would you like to see some State, Country information in the first thread
  • Currently sorted by most recent updated -- do we want to keep it that way or sort alpha?
I think that is all I have for now ..
Carrie~Anne
I think it would be nice to put some blurb at the top of the page...similar to what you have for the Needs New Home section. Something telling posters to just post that they are in that state and be more specific if they want, but not giving their contact information in their post, and to limit using the thread for discussion purposes...maybe suggesting they use the PM function if they want to connect with another member in their state. OR maybe the above information can be put in the first post? Most people tend to read the first post, but not the stuff above it.

I'm not sure on posting States that have illegal Quakers or not. I mean this forum is open to all bird owners, but does revolve around QPs in general. We do have members that are still active that don't have Quakers though.

And I think having it in alpha order would work best. I mean new posts will show up in the 'view new posts' option, right?

Btw, Dee. You did a great job on this. Thanks!! smile.gif

I agree with you Connie---I have tried to get this implemented but to no avail.....
If people would put it in their avatar, that would take care of it; and I know some people don't like to do that, especially younger people....But hopefully most people will and then we can just glance up and look....If you can't/don't won't to list your town, maybe just the state....It will help sooooo much....Now I've said my piece... tongue.gif wink.gif

Agreed .. I have put it at the top of the forum page but will try to come up with something to put in the first post of every thread. I have created a thread for all States and like you mentioned we do have members that don't have quakers but would still be networking with others so we won't restrict it based on legal/illegal quaker states.

Switched it to Alpha order .. I think in most cases members will be looking for a specific state/region versus most recent. Yes the view new posts will function as normal ..

Carrie~Anne --> what do you think about splitting Canada? I mean geographically Canada is massive and a parrot transport in the province of Ontario alone could mean a two day drive .. tongue.gif Alternatively we could leave it as one thread and suggest that members be clear about the location when posting for transports, bird sitting or listing avian events etc .. Thoughts?

Another thought --> The first post currently looks pretty bland .. As Carrie~Anne suggested I think I will try to come up with a blurb that identifies a purpose for roll call .. I was also thinking that maybe placing an image of the respective flags within the first post and maybe a quote that is reflective of the state/country/region.. What do you guys think?

It will take some time to build and refine but it is a project in the works right?
Paula0442
Yeaaaaaaahhhh, you did it!!!!!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOUUUUU!

Currently, I don't think we have that many active Canadian members, not compared to the US members, so I don't know if we'd need to separate Canada any more. Having said that, it might be easier to separate it now, rather then later on when we do end up getting more Canadian members, plus it would cause less confusion to do it now rather then at a later date.

How bout as you suggested earlier...

Pacific, Prairies, Eastern, Atlantic,and Territories?

I really like your idea of putting in the state/province flag...or how bout bird??? laugh.gif....and additional information in the first post. If you need any help with that, Dee, let me know. I don't mind doing some web searching. smile.gif
Carrie~Anne
Just another thought, Dee...

Would it be possible to have each country as a sub-forum, then have the provinces/states that fall under those countries as threads? This way it's easy to see where you want to go right off the bat, rather then having to scroll down to find Canada, or the International post.
Dee
I agree .. It really seems massive the way it is now eh? I will work at subforums .. I also love the idea of birds ..

Does the US and other countries have State birds etc ..

Here is a link to Canada's birds

http://www.web-nat.com/bic/provbird.html

Thanks QPdad for the list of US states .. biggrin.gif
Dee
Ok ..So I have created the subforums and moved the threads around. I haven't had a chance to split out Canada yet but will take a look when I get home from work tonight ..
Carrie~Anne
Here is a list for US state birds, along with their flags if you decide to go that route...

http://home.cfl.rr.com/usainfo/

From what I can find on the internet, Australia doesn't have an official national bird, but the Emu is on the Coat of Arms and is considered the unofficial national bird. Personally, I like the Kookaburra better laugh.gif

Not sure what we would do for International though
