Last week I received an email from one of the admin ladies in the Ag sci department. She had rescued a musk lorikeet from being attacked by wattle birds. I went to see this little bird thinking I'd have to be really careful as it would be very scared. WEll, this amazing, cute and gentle little patient just softly pressed itself into my hand. It let me pick it up and examine it all over. Poor little thing had cracked its beak and was bleeding a bit. I took it to the vet but there was not too much damage done. I am feeding it soft, wet lorikeet mix and it will ONLY eat the stuff when I am holding the cup to its beak. These birds flit about so fast among the trees I never imagined one could be so sweet and quiet. It makes a very high pitched peep but only quietly. It snuggles into the blanket I gave it, just like my rainbow does. I can't believe this bird! It just oozes trust and I feel incredibly privileged to be allowed to get so close to it.

That's wonderful, it's lucky someone like you was there to come to it's rescue smile.gif

What a great story! It confirms what I believe about their intelligence and ability to feel grateful. On a smaller scale, it's like when I give Willie a special treat. He goes and looks at it and always comes back toward me with a little "tweet tweet" before going back to enjoy it.

The little lorikeet sensed your kindness.

Yeah, I'm amazed. He likes to sit up on his gum tree perch and peep softly.

To Andy's Mom: OK! OK! I'll some fuzzy ones up on Photobucket before you send any Canon weilding "boys" around!!!! (I don't know how to make them small enough to fit into the forum attachment system and everyone has gone HOME!! which is where I'm going now...)

A wonderful story!!!! Birds are so great and so many people wo don't have them, have no clue what they are missing!
Joseph
That is ABSOLUTELY right! I never knew life could be so full and fascinating. Every day there is something to talk about, laugh about or to share. Thanks heaps for that programme! I'll use it in the future. I can't get any more photos tonight as I forgot to take the camera home. Those photos were taken at the uni on the first day he was found.

This little guy has torn down every idea I ever had about wild birds. He is actually sitting on my shoulder! He is exploring my face and hair. He's had a few little flits around the loungeroom but because he is so unfamiliar with houses he needs careful watching. I've hung up lots of drapey things around as I don't want him to hurt his beak again. It's dark outside so he can't crash into the windows. These guys would make great pets!

OOOOH how precious..thank you Joseph for the pictures and I so loved the story you told....It is the power of love within your soul that you have to take that birdie when you saw what had happened...Bless you...Hoping it's little beak will soon be healed....

Hello all, just thought you might want an update by now on my little wild friend! Well, she is still with me as her beak is still rubbery and looks like it's been stuck on at an angle. She can now go to it with an apple but I'm not confident she would be okay in the wild yet. We have not been able to locate a flock. It is winter now and the food is scarce so it seems the flock are ranging wider otherwise they are pairing up and are occupied with that. I'm not sure.

As far as adapting she is a little tyke! You know all that stuff I said about being so "sweet" and "quiet" well just forget it!! She is bold and naughty! And you remember how I said I was amazed by her trust, well she is twice as trusting as she used to be and will zip around twittering, landing where she darn well likes. Just like a lorikeet should be. She now sits on my head, flies down to her bowl and sees off the competition - the 'tiels on my shoulder or on the bench. She nips fingers and ears, licks faces with that long glopsitta tongue and chimes in with the best of them when the vacuum cleaner goes on. She loves the company of my Princess Parrot and both will hang out together on the tops of curtains etc. They fly around the house together. My rainbow won't let her hang near him at all!!!

I know I'll have to get photos. I actually have a few on a digicam which I thought I could just copy off but I don't think it's possible. So, I'll try and remember to go to it soon.

BTW I'm saying "she" now because she seems like one, that's all. She isn't very showy. She's sort of petite and nippy like my Princess. I have no idea, though.

I'm so glad that she's doing well smile.gif she sounds great. If she's getting on well with everyone and living a healthy and happy life I'd consider keeping her. It's a really cold winter (and if it's cold in SA then it's REALLY cold in TAS...). I would feel terrible if I let her go only for her to starve or something, especially if you can't find her flock. Do you have any idea how old she is, would she know how to survive on her own? Just a thought.

Loris are such wonderful birds. How great that you're getting to help this one through it's injury. I've always wanted one but I don't want the mess so I go visit a Lori aviary down south when I'm there.

Made me laugh that she's comfortable enough with you now to be bold and naughty. smile.gif
