Hi everyone I haven't been around much, what with work and all of my fids to see to. Everyone is great Miss Mya says night night now, but only after Bullwinkle and Rocky say it first. What with spring the hormones are ragein Miss Mya would like to get close to Rocky, but this mother says No NO lol
OK got a question I rescued a bonded pair of teils they are both the dark grey mom is all dk grey dad has some yellow on head and a little white on his wings, they laid a clutch and before i could get them seperated they started hatching, they are all spoken for (4 of them) My question is WHERE DID THIS PRETTY WHITE FEATHERED BABY WITH THE REDDISH PINK EYES COME FROM???
here they are they are 3 weeks old, someone please tell me what you think

That white baby with the red/pink eyes looks like an albino tiel smile.gif. She has no natural pigments, hence why she is white. Her eyes are red because she has no colour in her iris, so the blood circulating at the back of the eye is visible. Are her beak and feet also pale?

It's rare, but it happens. I think it's a double recessive gene, which means you need 2 full copies for it to express, hence why 1 baby is albino and all the others aren't. These two parents both likely carry a copy of the albino gene and will occasionally throw albino chicks.

I had an albino budgie and it was a great pet.

If you think he/she is a pretty teil and want to keep her as a pet then I'd go ahead and do it... but I'd check with Carrie~Anne or BettyK about the ramifications of breeding an albino bird if that was the plan. smile.gif

I could be wrong... she might be a lutino, Carrie~Anne or BettyK should be along soon with a better answer... smile.gif

thanks for the reply Jamie, he/she beak and feet are very pale compared to the other 3 and yes albino or not i will be keeping this pretty one, and NOT for breeding, i have 2 pairs that are already doin that, now its time for them to rest, enough babies for a while LOL

You could have a parent bird that has a mutation gene. Definitely talk to Betty K or Carrie Anne or NCVon and get more info. I'm not up on all the genetics when it comes to cockatiels, And since so many of them have been cross bred with different mutations its really hard to know what you've got. In fact its really hard to find a pure normal gray bird now that has got some type of mutation gene in its history.

As Jamie said and I agree, the ones to get info from about it is Betty, Carrie Anne and NCVon.

Very cute!! wub.gif

Looks like you have a Normal Grey, two Pieds and a Lutino smile.gif

The white baby, which is the Lutino, has the yellow crest, so she isn't completely white. If she were ALL white, with red eyes, she would be a Whiteface Lutino (not albino, as there is no albino mutation in the Cockatiel world).

So how did the Lutino baby happen? Simple really wink.gif Dad is split to Lutino. So he carries the Lutino gene, which is sex linked gene. The really cool thing is that I guarantee you that this Lutino baby is a female. smile.gif

As she grows older, her eyes will darken and will no longer be the bright red. In fact, they will darken to a dark, ruby colour and will be hard to see any red in normal lighting. Most Lutinos look like they have black eyes. Here is my Lutino..

The other two birds with the yellow crests are Pieds. They look like Light Pieds actually. Pied is a recessive mutation, meaning both parents have to carry the gene in order to pass it down to their chicks. So both mum/dad have to be either visual Pieds, or split to Pieds.

Those babies are just beautiful!!! Glad to hear they all have homes smile.gif

My goodness they are beautiful.Besides Quakers I love tiels. I have 3 myself. What i believe are 2 males and 1 female. It seems that once you see one that catches your eye there is no turning back. It is probably like getting hit by an avalance. Not sure never been hit by one.
Anyway good luck to you and I am glad you found homes for the babies and that you decided to keep her.
