Hello,
I don't know if people remember Niki, but he is a 13 yr. old quaker (he just had a b-day) who has developed some issues in the past couple of years. He has some problems with his kidneys. I started taking him to a good vet a year or so ago and he is on maintenance medicine for his kidneys and also an herb that acts as a diuretic (he had some swelling).

He had blood work done today and I'm happy to say that everything came back normal. His uric acid had been high, but no more. The vet is going to see about decreasing one of his herbals. He'll be glad to hear that.

At the same time, Niki is a sick little birdy. I noticed he has been sleeping a lot the past couple of weeks and stopped building. He has also lost some feathers around his right ear. The vet took a gram stain and he has a bad yeast infection. She also rinsed out his nares and some blood came out. I feel so bad I didn't take him sooner. Anyway, He is now on 2 new medicines (antibiotics) and I have to put a drop of boric acid in his ear and his nares every day for 3 wks. The poor little guy.

We're both going to be a pair next week. I'm going to get all of my wisdom teeth out on Monday. It's going to be interesting to say the least. It's tough being a single birdy-mom.

Well, glad to hear Nikki is doing better in the kidney department. Sometimes being on certain meds changes the flora in the crop and allows the yeast infection to get going. Hopefully all his sinus and ear stuff will clear up to.

As far as your wisdom teeth go...just take it easy for the first 48 hours, Don't drink through a straw, No smoking if you do and remember gentle swishing with warm salt water, You'll be fine if you just take it easy.

Thanks for the moral support about the wisdom teeth. I've put it off for 20 some years.

I'm hoping I didn't hurt Niki's antibiotics. They're supposed to be kept refrigerated and I realized this after they had been sitting on the counter for 4 hours. Stupid.

That is wonderful news about Niki's kidneys. I still think about him all the time as my quaker channer also had a high uric acid level around the same time, but when checked by a different vet it came back normal.
I realize I'm just a teeny bit late in replying here but was wondering how well things went with his yeast infection. What a little trooper he is

That is wonderful news. Hope he continues to do well, and that you heal up quick from your wisdom tooth surgery.

Thanks! I haven't had much time lately to visit this site this summer, but Niki is doing very well. I'm touched you're all still thinking about him. His yeast infection went away and he's been better. The vet even had me reduce some of his herbals. His girlfriend Obie is still at the vet's when he boards there and they're very cute together. I think it helps him to be around other birds from time to time.

As for me, it took me about 4 weeks to get back to eating fairly normally after my wisdom teeth. It was not fun, but it's done. I should have had them out 20 years ago.

I'll try to stop in more frequently. Thanks for all the support.

Chris
