Hi.
I am a new Quaker owner (first bird) and rapidly finding out how much I DON'T know about keeping a bird! I have been picking your brains for a month now and keep coming up with new concerns and questions.
Now it's bird mites.
My cats have brought two fledgling robins into the house. The cats are declawed so they must just be picking them up off the ground! The fledglings seem okay - no blood or obvious wounds - so I have just been putting them outside and keeping the cats in now.
So - my question - can those robins have brought bird mites into my house and what do I do to protect my Quaker, and myself, from becoming infested.
Geez! I thought I only had fleas and ticks on the dogs and cats to worry about!
Thanks people!

Mmmmmmmmmmmm don`t really know but if they wernt near your bird and if you washed your hands etc before you went near your fid I would say the risk of mites would be minimal ..Someone else may have better advise , I wouldn`t stress too much and I wouldn`t rush out and douse your fid with mite stuff either.. Just my opinion..

Here is a thread that recently talked about mites.

I agree with Majj. I really wouldnt worry about it too much. You could vaccum where the birds were and empty the contents of the vaccum in the outside trashcan for an extra precaution.

I also doubt there's not much need for concern... However if you are really concerned about it, call your vets office and talk to them about it. If you didn't touch your bird and he hasn't been allowed down on the floor where you found the robins, chances are very slight that there'll be a problem.

Make sure that you vacuum well and then dump the vacuum outside as Impy suggested. If you're really worried, check your bird for mites, You may need a magnifying glass and check at the base of their wings around the vent and right at the edge where the feathers begin/end on the leg. If you notice any little white, tan or even sometimes reddish black crawly things they'll need to be treated. They kind of look like a tiny tiny piece of rice or specks of sand.

Here's a link that explains more about them http://www.avianweb.com/mites.html#redmites
