Vet says that Bear is growing at a good rate and gaining weight on target. However she did note today when I asked about it, that he is a tad to thin. She asked about his diet and I told her he is on **** Vanpattons Duck and Potato, also gets the sausage type food from same Company and also the Lil bits. They (the dogs) get the Sausage in the mornings with the duck and Potato, and a choice of Duck and Potato or Lil bits during the day. She said that is fine.

How can I put some meat on this little guys bones? I don't want a large dog but I don't want one that looks and feels like it is starving.

We went for a fecal and gland expression today. We were suppose to have the fecal the 3rd but I forgot a sample.

Give him a few more calories a day would be one of the easiest providing he doesn't have any medical reasons. The fecal will tell if there's worms and that could be the cause but if he's growing and gaining weight sometimes they're just like a human in that they will bulk up and look chubby and then have a growth spurt and then they look skinny again.

Is he cleaning up all his food every meal, or does he leave part of it to nibble on? If he's cleaning it totally up after every meal, you might try feeding him like an 1/8 to a 1/4 cup more per feeding.

Has the vet done a blood work up on him to check thyroid levels etc yet? Sometimes yorkies can have thyroid problems but usually it causes them to be over weight.

Talk to your vet when you get the fecal results back and see what they have to say...

Fecal test was negative. I got that results right then and there. Took a little bit for her to have a look but everything was great there. He did have some impactions of his anal glands but that wouldn't affect the skinny factor.

He and Sassy have their own bowls but they have to have what the other one is having. I am not sure how much he eats but it's a lot~ He eats a big Breafast and dinner and snacks during the day. I have to go back at the end of the month I will ask again then about it, but she wasn't as worried as I am.

I feed RAW and only raw with a few side dishes of cereal now and then. My dogs get fat on very little food...too fat if I am not careful. They eat a lot less (cheaper in the long run), their coats are as shiny as glass and they are so healthy, they never see a vet except for shots. I've done this for years and never had a dog that needed a vet til they died of old age. Finally someone did a website on it.
Jack, the dog that came from next door 3 years ago and refuses to go home started on raw at 12 years old and crippled with arthritis. After being on raw for a month, he was playing and running like a puppy. He's 15, almost 16 now and still going strong.

Like Connie said. Try adding in an extra bit for him. I would try seperating the dogs too so that you know for sure how much he is eating.

Thanks I appreciate all the advice and as always will take it all under advisement and talk it over with my vet.

I am happy with the current diet as there is no GRAIN whatsoever in it. It is human grade food and **** Van Patton himself ate it on TV to show it's safe for people too. I might add Canned to Bears diet because it is 100% natural ingredients and human grade also. I am not sure what I am going to do until I talk to Everyone I need to.

I second the tad more food in his diet but with regular exercize to compensate as well.. you want to gain weight but muscle for the lil guy as well.... I wuoldn't really recomend soft food simply because it is important for a dogs gums to be chewing and crunching which they don't get from canned food...

our yellow lab was thin as a pup and we just added about a half cup more each day to his serving (depedning on how much exercise he got that day) and a few extra rawhide bones did the trick with him... i've attached pics as a pup and as an adult now smile.gif (dont mind his paw in the second one.. he broke a nail and had to have it covered for a couple of weeks!!!!)

on a side note.. we used to never know how much pooch was eating b/c we made the mistake of leaving food down ALL the time during the day and just kept filling it.. for a couple of days we would leave it for fifteen mins (on our vets advice) and then take it up until dinner... soon enough Simon learned to eat all of his food when we put it down and we were better able to monitor what he was eating.. a necessity in a three dog household!! lol

Good luck!!!

oops only attached "adult pic" .. trying to find the other one from when he was a skinny pup!
