Full Version: Cage Size For Three
Quaker Parrots Forum > For Quaker Parrots Only > Quaker Parrot Accommodations & Accessories
Howies mommy
I have recently acquired three of the most darling little quaker babies and need some advice on a cage that will be good for all three of them to live in, together. Two of them are clutch mates and are girls, Duckie and Doody. The other is two days older and sex unknown at this time, Howie. They were all pulled from the parents at the same time, two weeks old, and have been hand fed and raised together since then. So them getting along is not going to be a problem.

I want to get them the largest cage possible. Their cage will have to have many toys, different places to sleep, play and eat so that they can have their own space inside if they want it. I can picture me buying three of everything that I get. rolleyes.gif But that will be okay too.

I would rather not have a play top since the cage will probably be tall already to accommodate them and all of their goodies.

I will have a play/perch area for them to hang out in when they are not in their cage.

I have been looking for a week now and am not sure of bar spacing or anything like that since their little heads will likely be different sizes.

I think I can comfortably afford $500 or so with, shipping. Is that a good cost for a cage for them? Can I find a good quality cage cheaper? It would be so much easier if they could tell me what THEY wanted. I would go buy it for them.

I just need some help and some advice.

Congrats on your three new babies, you're so brave to get three at the same time!

Minimum cage size for ONE Quaker is 18x18 with a bar spacing of 1/2" or 5/8" (some people get 3/4" but personally I wouldn't, but Casey is a very small Quaker.)

If it were me, I would NOT cage all three of them together... clutch mates or not I just wouldn't do it. wink.gif I think they all need their personal space to go 'home' to after playing together and as they grow up there is a huge chance they will all bond to each other and then not get along with you... Or Howie could be a boy and you can't risk breeding siblings... or since there is three of them one will be the odd man out and there could be fighting. I would give them each their own space to save any problems that may happen in the future...

You could try looking at HQ cages, I have heard very good things about them and you could probably buy all three cages for around (or a little more than) $500.

Others should be around shortly to add their thoughts...

Good luck!

I totally agree, it wouldn't be a good idea to have them all in the same cage. They will bond to each other and eventually cut you out. Each needs their own cage, toys and space to themselves, and individual time with you in order for you to form a good bond with each one.

I third the sentiment about not caging them all together, Are you sure there are 2 females...were they DNA'd
Unless they were, there's no guarantee even the most experience breeder is only 50% correct if they feel pelvic bone etc.

I also agree that having an odd number of birds housed together is asking for one of them to get picked on. So your better off in my opinion to have even numbers in one cage if you are set on housing them together.

I have 2 females that came to me housed in the same cage. They are very tightly bonded and while they were raised separately they are TIGHT now. They can still be handled for the most part but they insist on being handled together Or when the other one gets put back in the cage it gets picked at and scolded by the other.

I also agree that you should be able to get very nice cages for all 3 for just around $500.00 and I LOVE HQ cages. But there are other good ones out there.

Good luck on your choice.

Here is a site with HQ cages: I just recently purchased a bigger cage for Kiwi. Also the shipping is free. I also live in Oregon.......

I agree with what has been said! For a budget for 500 you can have a lovely time shopping for fantastic cages for each of them smile.gif

5/8 bar spacing i would say is perfect for a quaker.. thats what our baby has and there's no prob's but i could definitely forsee some with larger bar spacing smile.gif Happy Shopping for your new babies!
New QP Dad
Howie's Mom -
As my name suggests, I am a New QP Dad but I just received a new cage from these folks, called a "Pali Place" for $ 159.95 delivered and I was impressed with the quality of the cage and their service:
BirdCages4Less

The cage I purchased, IMHO would easily house TWO QP's and it was listed UNDER SMALL CAGES: Pali Place 30"x18"x62" on stand

You can see pictures I posted of the cage on my thread just a little while ago: http://www.quakerparrots.com/forum/index.p...0&start=220

Good Luck!
