Full Version: Wembley Has Attitude

Wembley has become cocky. He can fly now, and he likes to follow Gobo around and hit the spider plants that hang from ceiling. He's like a boomerang, he keeps flying to the plants..

Tonight, he wouldn't go on my finger, but instead would fly away. I had to make him fly till he was real tired, and now he hates me! I had to hold him to put him in cage, and he drew blood for the first time! I was able to get him sometimes on to my finger, but he won't let me cuddle him, doesn't trust my hand right now. Will he 'recover', forgive me for that?

Will only clipping wings help the matter? He absolutely hates being held and goes crazy when you hold him..I'd be worried about breaking a wing bone when clipping him...with the help of a friend.

I just came home and put him to bed..I hope he forgives me...I was cursing when I was chasing him this afternoon, I had to go somewhere...

I think the wing clipping will help him secure his place as not being the top bird again.... give him time and patience and he'll recover from his fear of your right hand ... I'm sure of it!

Carolyn - if you are coming to Calgary any time soon there is "Calgary's Own Bird Lady" - Sandi Cameron and she does both bird boarding and wing clips. You could board Wembley there for the few days you are in cow town ($10/day for Captain including 3 meals of fresh veggies, fruit and rice/pasta) and she'll do a wing clip for you if you ask her to. I have her do Captain's beak, wings and nails and it's a whopping $18. Cheaper than having my vet do it! Captain just LOVES her... she has a wonderful natural affinity for birds which is only overshadowed by how much all the birds love her teenage son. They are both regular Dr Dolittles when it comes to birds.

So if you don't want to do Wembley's wings by yourself, you could bring him when you next head up here, or see if there is a bird sitter in your neck of the woods who will do a trim? That way you are the rescuer instead of the EVIL TIEL EATING HAND! Wembley sounds just like what happens if Captain sees a hat. She HATES hats.

louie got that way too when he learned he was able to fly once again. he was very flighty, and sometimes downright mean. and of course the highest spots were always the hardest to rescue him from, like the chandalier over the dining room table. we clipped minimal feathers and he was back to his sweet self instantly. he didn't even hold a grudge.

it's stressful when your happy bird suddenly becomes a huge butt. i know i cussed a lot too lol. but it will get better.

He had a good sleep last night and seems to be better. I cuddled him first thing this morning to see if he'd let me do it, and he did..and he steps up again. Maybe I frightened him trying to catch him yesterday..

I'll have to think about the wing clipping though, the lady at the bird store in Vancouver showed me how to clip wings..I still have the piece of paper with diagram on it.

Update: Nope, he doesn't like me handling him. It must be to do with him having good flight now....doesn't need me no more. I wonder how hard clipping wings is to do if he doesn't like to be held..and will go crazy when you hold him? I don't want to break a wing joint.

Yep, sounds like he is getting a little uppity. Time for an attitude adjustment. My grey gets like that, once he realizes he can indeed fly. But usually i let him keep them hoping they all come in {before he knows he can fly} so i just have to clip once.

It's def hormonal..he's been chasing Gobo a lot...and he's infatuated with her even though she wants nothing to do with him..playing hard to get! I'm sure he's a bit frustrated!

He's been cuddling with me lots today and wants to hang around with me, so that's good. I am glad I trained him to fly to me on command...it works..I whistle and call him and he comes over to my shoulder. I knew the clicker training would come in handy.

I think he was frightened and pissed off yesterday. I had to chase him till he was very tired, and he wasn't too happy about that! And I think I scared him doing that..chasing him around the house..which is why he bit me.

Glad I have reunion this weekend, need to give him time to himself a bit more...last night I needed to get away to give him his quiet time after scaring him, and to resist the temptation of bringing him out soon after..he needed time to quiet down..and a good sleep to be better behaved today.
