I'm not sure what kind. It's only ONE step out my door so the bird instantly flies away when going in or out. I can't imagine why it would put the nest so close to a traffic zone.
It has a lot of medium length blonde/gray hair entwined in it.

They look exactly like English (House) sparrow eggs but the nest looks too coarse for them. I'm sure it's some kind of sparrow though.

Sometimes, they choose what they consider "safe" traffic areas because it might discourage "unsafe" traffic.

It could be house finches also for last summer i had a pair nest inmy hanging flower basket and it was neat to watch them grow. though th epoorplant suffered a bit. Keep us posted on them. smile.gif

House Finch eggs are not nearly so blotched.
House Sparrow nests are typical weaver nest and ususally located in cavities. This nest seems to have an outer structure and an inner lining. Also, House sparrow eggs are not quite that blothced. They are a bit speckled

That is a nest of Mimus polyglottos (Northern Mockingbird).

To confirm;

Is the outside diameter of the nest ~ 7"?
Is the inside diameter ~ 3 1/8"?
Is the height (from top to bootm) of the nest ~4.5"?
Is the depth (from top to bottom of inside) ~2 3/8"?

Are the eggs ~ 24.6 mm (just under an inch) long?

And most importantly, do you have a mockingbird singing all kinds of songs all day long right outside?smile.gif

The eggs will be hatching 12-14 days after the last egg was laid?

I would love to do all of that measuring but wouldn't getting my smell in there upset the mother enough to abandon them?
As far as the quick fly by gives me, I think it might be a sparrow, now that it was mentioned. I'll keep watch and take pics as things progress. I've been using a zoom because, again. I don't want to p o the mother.
Koki
smile.gif Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest you should get out there and actually measure it. I figured you could eye-ball it and estimate the dimensions:)

And again, I don't recommend you handle the nest, but human scent on the nest, eggs, or the babies will in no way effect the mother's maternal instinct.

Here I am still waiting. They're still all intact but yesterday morning I went out to check and one of the eggs was about 5" away from the nest. The nest is down in a planter so mommy would have had a hard time truly pushing it out, if that's what was happening. I haven't seen mom lately and the boys coming in and out of my door haven't said anything about her flying away when they come up on the porch.
Is there anyway to find out if they're still alive? Candeling(sp?) maybe?

Yesterday, the next door neighbor let me know that she had a nest in her newspaper box. She said she heard the cheeping one day and then nothing for a week. I went and took the nest out, since no one else would, and got the nest. It was amazing. The back of it was a perfect, tight, square. Exactly the shape of the box. There was a dead baby in it too. I got it out and held it. My neighbor's all think I'm a freak. LOL
Anyway, here are a couple pictures, though the nest pics don't do it justice.

I wouldn't worry about candling them. Time will tell and their best chance is to be bothered as little as possible.

The nest from the newspaperbox appears to be a wren nest, based on 1) the material the nest is made of, and 2) wrens commonly build in any little cubby hole around or near houses.

I have the same type of nest in my storage shelf outside. These little finches have laied a clutch of 5 and I have not even tried to mess with em so far. Today me and my daughters had to take a peep, to we stood on a chair and checked em out so quietly. One lil guy has hatched and he is sooooo cute. Like the size of one of your pinky knuckles. smile.gif

We went from 5 eggs to four eggs and then 3 eggs. Where the fourth one went is beyond me. I looked every where for the shell, or pieces of, and they were no where to be found.

Last night I took a peek around 8:00pm and all was as it's been. This morning I peeked in and look what I found...

I almost thought they were dead at first but then one raised it's head and opened it's little beak, which closed too fast to get a picture of.

If Mom's away from the nest tomorrow, I'll take another picture. I'll try everyday so we can watch it's progress.

From the day they come out, what is the approximate time until they fly away?

Paula, looks like Cardinal eggs to me. The ones in my picture were Cardinals. I saw the mother bird coming to the nest (built in a climbing rose bush. I caught her gone one day and peeked in. There were two egges. She never came back. Either one of my barn cats got her ot a snake, but not likely a snake because he didn't come back and get the eggs.

Yours could be Mocking birds or Cardinals, even Wrens, they all build in low places...makes no sense.
My nest had black hair from my horses' manes and tails

EDIT: Looking back at yours, the nest structure is different. It looks almost like some kind of Finch or Wren
Paula0442
I'm pretty sure it's a wren. She shoots past me if I have to walk out the door. LOL
Weeza, this nest has dog hair and stuffed animal stuffing that was in our back yard. The nest itself is in the front. LOL Mom was a busy little bee.
If you look closely at the nest you can see them.

Here is day 2...

It's getting little fuzzies already.
Andie's Mom
Paula, sneak out the back door and around and see if you can get a picture of Mom on the nest.

I went to WV for a week and came back to this...

The last egg is still in there. I don't know what the status of it would be.

Paula,
Thanks for sharing the pictures, and your story of the wren nest. It is fun to watch a nest, guess what kind of birds they are and finally get to see the babies! Great pictures, Julie
