Petrie's Mama
Okay, my 2 year old Petrie has been humping non-stop for a year now. The vet and the people at the avian society keep telling me that this is only a few months out of the year...not with him! He is constantly doing it! ohmy.gif

He gets aggressive with me and then laughs about it! BUT, he has no problem with my husband. I have to catch him in a good mood for him to even approach me with love..... mellow.gif

I want to know if this is how he is going to be forever. I mean he gets into it...he throws his head back and opens his mouth and starts panting and lightly chirping! My husband calls it "birdy porn" cause Lilo the Amazon always says "Watcha doin'?" duh!!!

Any advice would be great!

If anyone can open it.....I have attached a video! Sorry, I just wanted people to see what I was talking about!

He does this non-stop all day!

OMG! I am so glad you included the movie. I have never seen anything like it because I am a first-time owner of a young Quaker. However, I'm sure someone with more experience will give some good advice.

Thanks for the education!

Try not to overbond with your bird. My vet gave me a pamphlet with information on preventing mating behaviors. Here is a different one on the topic from my vet:
Care Sheets
Playing with Parrots

I don't follow her guidelines but I would advise them in your situation. You want to avoid cuddling with the bird too intensely until he stops this behavior. Avoid placing him on your shoulder or head or under clothing. Quakers have certain mating behaviors besides "humping", mine makes a soft clicking noise and puffs up and lifts his legs back and forth, which I've read is a mating behavior from others here. Make sure to place him on a perch or the ground and ignore him for 5-15 minutes promptly when he does this undesired behavior.

Thanks for this info! SweetPea is also at that "time" in his life. He is quite fond of a spot on his comfy perch where it crosses over a wooden perch. I did make sure to duplicate this in his cage here because I read that I shouldn't discourage this behavior (or start the behavior in other places.. namely ME). It is a little unsettling to be a first-time bird mom with a recently-matured QP. I am trying to learn how to help my husband to work with SweetPea so he does not view me as a mate and John as a rival. He did step up on John's hand from mine this morning - a victory! Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated by all THREE of us!

Wow, thanks for that little piece of info....

I'm getting my little quaker soon, it's good to be educated (I wouldn't want to be caught off gaurd). I hope you get some good advice, good luck smile.gif

He does this non stop. Not just certain times of the year. He bonded with me and then when he started biting me, he automatically bonded with my husband. I have the care sheets and three different books. None of them cover the constant "humping". We call him Sir Humps-A-Lot!
