Full Version: Why Does My Quaker Poop On My Floor?

I have been wondering how her droppings been getting on my floor. I thought I had a ghost until I saw her do it. BUSTED! She back all the way up, tail feathers where all the way out of the cage and so was her butt and then she bends all the way over and shoots her droppings about 6" out away from the cage and totally misses the poop tray. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can teach her not to do that? I moved a mirror over to where she is doing that to see if it blocks her. Help would greatly be appreciated. smile.gif

There are others on this forum who also have "shooters" who will be able to help you. What I would like to know is why Shah saves his droppings up all day and then when I pick him up, he lets go all over me (I now have special bird clothes that I wear). The same applies to the morning - no matter what time I get him out of the cage (anywhere between 6am and 8am) he does the night's supply all over me. I am wondering if I remind him of a toilet! I dont mind but it would be nice, just for one time, to pick him up without the ritual pooping.

The reason birds and especially quakers I've noticed poop outside the cage or against one side is because they do it instinctually, They really don't want to soil their house. Wild quakers live in colony housing these houses are composed of lots of different nests inside one big nest and each nest has 3 compartments. One is like the foier at the open then the next one acts as like a family room and the third is the nesting room. They don't like to soil the nest so they scoot as far to the edge of the room as possible and let it fly.

If you ever get a chance to see little baby birds in a nest, pay close attention and when they have to poop they scoot their butts over to the edge. Makes for a drier nest and less bacteria. Some species of birds will actually pack the droppings completely out of the nest when they are raising a clutch.

I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh at your situation because it was very new to you...
You've received some good advice and please do excuse my manners of laughing, not at you, but at your situation....I guess it was funny because so many people have had that to happen with them....
I guess you could put a sheet or something all the way around the cage that would catch it.....Shooters they are.... smile.gif

Another sharp poop shooter LOL Joey does that to once in a while! Just cover the bottom of the cage.

Of course there are exceptions to the cleanliness instinct. There are some qps on here that poop in their happy huts. But i guess there are slobs in every group of animlals.LOL laugh.gif

lol, if I only knew this beforehand, today while getting ready to do the usual cage cleanup and feeding session I noticed one of the fellas pointing east with a happy face... he actually sniped a big piece of poop to my bath curtain... good thing my mom didnt see that... lol

as for the cage surroundings... the same, poop all around... I had to place some napkings to prevent somehow the staining & mess...

does anyone have a guide or advice to train these snipers?

- - someone? please... I will get killed if I dont fix this behavior before they grow up.. lol, for now is no problem since I keep them in my room, but when a bigger cage is needed, that will be a nightmare... (my mom doesnt like having poop on the floor... )

Wow, Clyde must be a slob. biggrin.gif He poops all over his cage, all over me, all over his mirror, which is his favorite place to sit next to me, and doesn't seem in the least inclined to shoot it out of his cage. He doesn't care how messy it is in there. I keep cleaning it up and he keeps messing it right back up. Maybe he thinks it's his job to keep me busy.

WOW, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THERE WAS A NAME FOR IT..."SHOOTERS". HEE, HEE. MY CARTI POOPS AT ME EVERY MORNING WHEN I UNCOVER HER CAGE. GOOD TO KNOW THAT I AM NOT ALONE. I JUST WEAR A RAIN COAT. ONLY KIDDING.

I take it all back. Clyde must've been reading over my shoulder -- as a matter of fact, he was sitting on my shoulder when I started reading this thread earlier laugh.gif -- and he has now learned to shoot, too. Hubby was cleaning the kitchen today and happened to notice the table where we keep Clyde's house during the day had several deposits upon it, and he asked me, "How did he DO that?" So I explained, based on what the rest of you said. I didn't actually witness the act. So Hubby cleaned it up, jokingly grumbling about the little stinker. I blame the rest of you for giving Clyde ideas. wink.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif Eli is a very neat "pooper" so I can't complain!
However, when I open his cage door, he has learned to climb out and open up all the door from the outside (thank God he hasn't learned to open them from the inside)!
Now he sits on the out-swung door to eat and poops on the unprotected area of the floor dry.gif

Now I have to lay paper towels under that side of the cage, on the floor. I should own stock in Kleenex and paper towels!
