Uptown
Hi All,
I am leaving town for 10 days in August and I am planning ahead thinking about my options with my Quaker Uptown. He is unable to travel to where I am going and the two people I would trust to care for him are very scared around birds so they would most probably not take him out of his cage. sad.gif
Wondering what others have done when leaving town? My options are to leave him out of his cage in my bedroom and have someone (one of the scared friends so they would have no interaction with him) stay in my home with him in order to check in on him feed him and be here. Have someone (one of the scared friends) stay with him but keep Uptown in his cage for 10 days, which he is not used to. Or maybe find a Quaker sitter? I live in Northern New Jersey near to New York City but honestly for his happiness I would travel to another state to take him somewhere if someone knows of a GREAT place/KIND RESPONSIBLE KNOWLEDGEABLE people that sit Quakers around New Jersey / New York maybe. I am uncertain what to do and would appreciate some guidance.

Casey's Mom
When we go away Casey stays at our house so she is in a familiar environment and our neighbour comes over a few times a day to play with her and giver her food/clean her cage etc. She is used to being out for most of the day but adapts very well to being left caged. smile.gif The longest we've gone away and left her was 6ish days. This works great for some people and not so well for others. Casey is really laid back and is pretty flexible so it doesn't seem to bother her. biggrin.gif I'm pretty sure others do this too and haven't had any problems. I'd be very hesitant to leave him out of his cage if your friend isn't familar with birds and wouldn't interact with him, there would be too many dangers IMO...

If you're unable to find a birdsitter/don't feel comfortable having him caged for the entire time you could try contacting your avian vet as they might do boarding or know of a reputable place for Uptown to stay.

Good luck! smile.gif

I would not leave your little one alone in your room ..I would find a sitter a good avian vet will usually oblige have you checked out the link here where people have put there names down maybe there is a bird lover near bye who would mind your baby in their home ..A member here left their bird for a short time and have come home to a plucked bird and face a big battle ..Birds are flock creatures and do not do well left alone for a long period of time..SWome birds may do o.k and others not , I would not want to take the chance myself...
I hope you find someone who is not afraid of birds so your litttle guy will get the company he needs each day that you are gone...
Best of Luck...

The only time we traveled we boarded out bird with the Vet. They loved it. They got out time every day and a ton of attention. The vet fed them the diet we wanted, they received 2 daily check ups and at least 2 hours of out time a day.

Personally, I wouldn't leave him out alone in your room...for his safety more than protection to your property, As inquisitive as these little guys are you never know what they can find to get into trouble with.

Personally I would either have your friend come stay with him and interact with him inside the cage and try and keep his daily routine, less the out of cage time, as close to what he has now. You never know your friend might find out that its not as bad as they think and actually play with him.

Or your other option would be call your vet see if they board or if they know of any good reputable people who do.

Is he fully flighted? If he is, I would recommend trimming him before you go so that should your friend decide they want to try and take him out he can't get too far. Just instruct them on how to towel him so he can be put back in his cage if need be.

THANK YOU everyone for your thoughtful suggestions I think I will follow what seems to be the popular advice and contact my vet! Thank you
