Howies mommy
In the last couple of days I have been feeding the babies one baby at a time. They were exploring too much and too far from me with them all being out at one time. Plus, they are eating less in the mornings and I want to monitor how much and how fast or slow each have been eating.

Howie was the first little piggy at the door this morning, so I fed her first and then wanted some cuddle time. She wanted no part of it. She wanted the fresh food that I had just put into their cage.

So, she took off flying. Howie frightened herself this morning. I could see the little scared birdie look on her face when she first took off. Then I finally caught up with her, I could see the look of a very happy and proud baby. I am glad that the kitties were eating the baby bird food that I had abandoned on the table instead of wanting to eat the flying breakfast.

Needless to say after Howie was caught and put safely back into her cage, she started jabbering like mad as if to tell the other two what a great adventure she had. The three of them together reminded me of three little old ladies chattering back and forth telling all kinds of good and juicy gossip stories.

Question is this. Should I trim her wings? Or leave her flighted for a while. They are never out of the cage when I am not home. I would not mind getting Avaitor harnesses for each of them either. I would like for them to be able to fly when outside. I am just confused.

Howies Mommy - Hmmm? Kim, this was a question I wondered about as well. Howie must be around 7 weeks if he/she took off flying. I'm going to guess that Howie probably crash landed.... The babies have a problem at first with that skill. I flight trained Dolce for a week in a large room, all blinds closed to prevent crashes into windows and all room lights on. Seemed to me that the baby needed to develop strength and exercise his wing muscles and gain confidence in his natural abilities.
Andie's Mom sent me this link that got me thinking: Holistic Bird

I finally decided that for the safety of my precious youngster that it would be better to wing clip him now until my wife and I were sure that Dolce was TOTALLY bonded to us and could be recalled.

It is a personal choice to clip or not but on the other hand it will save unwanted accidents.

Surprisingly no. Howie did not crash. When she first took off she got close to the floor, from the coffee table, and got to a height of about four feet, made a nice lovely arc right into the kitchen and landed on the counter. She was very proud of herself.

I hopped up off of the floor because I did not want the kitty to eat her. I did not know that I could move as quickly as I did or holler that loudly, so very early in the morning. biggrin.gif

I have read that birds should be allowed their flight for a while (I think until they're weaned, but I'm not positive) because they need the confidence building and balance experience.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that made sense to me.
